Editing can be intimidating because you are looking at the story that you are telling from a detached perspective. 1) Keep an eye on grammar and spelling errors. 2) Cut all unnecessary words, sentences, and paragraphs. 3) Replace passive language with active language. 4) Check for formatting mistakes such as incorrect line spacing and missing spaces between words, punctuation, and periods at the end of sentences. 5) Read your work out loud to catch any errors that you might not notice by just reading it on the screen or in your head. 6) Make sure your tone is consistent throughout the piece 7) Check for any contradictions or fundamental misunderstandings in the logic of your 8) Be critical with yourself - avoid being defensive or prideful and look at the work 9) Read it out loud - this will catch most of the grammatical errors and typos. 10( Read it again and again - because our eyes skip over mistakes (like "their" for "they're"). 11) Seek feedback from others - other people's eyes can often see things that your own cannot, which is crucial when you are in a time crunch or are too close to the work you have created.
