6 Common Plumbing And Heating Myths - Debunked - PGS Services

It seems that when it comes to every subject in our lives, there are certain myths around it – and the situation is no different when it comes to the heating, gas and plumbing systems in London and South East England homes.

To make sure you don’t get caught in the trap, the expert Wembley, Surbiton and Chiswick plumbers here at PGS Plumbers have debunked six of the most common heating and plumbing myths.

Myth #1: Leaking taps are normal

You might be surprised to hear that a lot of people don’t think leaky taps are a big deal, as it is a common myth that your tap leaking is just a fact of life.

However, if left unfixed, leaking taps can begin to build up rot, rust and mould over time, which might even lead to you having to get a new tap altogether.

Myth #2: My pipes can’t be clogged because water is still going down the drain

In fact, it is not whether water goes down your drain, but how quickly the water goes down the drain that determines whether you have a clog.

If your sink or bath is slow to drain, then this is a sign of a small clog, which can build up over time to completely block the drain.

Instead of waiting until it is completely blocked, it is always best to take preventative measures, or call in one of our Reigate, Battersea or Chiswick plumbers as early as possible to minimise the inconvenience and damage.

Myth #3: Flushable wipes are flushable

‘Flushable’ wipes are a pet hate of every plumber, and certainly our own Woking, Purley and Chiswick plumbers. ‘Flushable’ wipes are not actually flushable, as they do not biodegrade.

This means they can quite easily get stuck inside your plumbing or your larger local sewage system, which can really do some damage. If you don’t want to fork out for unblocking, put them in the bin from now on.

Myth #4: Putting a brick in the toilet tank will save water

Although we love the creativity of trying to save a bit of money on your water bills, you should never put a brick anywhere near your toilet.

The water will cause the brick to erode, which can then lead to damage to the fixtures within your toilet, and pump brick dust through your water system.

Myth #5: Clogs can be prevented with boiling water

It is true that boiling water can melt any grease that might be trapped in the drainage pipes of your sink. However, the grease will only solidify again further down the pipe, potentially causing a more serious problem in the long run.

Myth #6: A noisy boiler means you need a new one

If you hear a noise coming from your boiler, you may understandably presume it’s on its last legs. However, a noisy boiler might just be a sign of poor circulation, or the presence of sludge or limescale.

This is easily solved by having your heating systems powerflushed. This involves flushing clean water through the pipes of your heating system to prevent the problem reoccurring.
