We are in an era where the whole world is collectively trying to reduce the usage of fossil fuels. The damage that fossil fuel has done to the world is too high to assess.

Air pollution, land pollution, water pollution, climate changes, global warming are a few direct causes of using fossil fuels. It affects, every living being including plants in the world.

Despite the damage done, fossil fuels are used in many industries to do various types of work. Electricity generation is one of the main uses among other uses of fossil fuel.

Currently, most countries all around the world are trying to move to renewable sources to produce electricity. Solar power is one of the renewable sources which is free anywhere in the world.

There are several ways to harness solar power. They are namely:

  1. Solar Photovoltaic systems
  2. Concentrated solar power

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are the most popular method to harness solar energy. It converts the sunlight directly into electricity. This method helps the user or power consumers to be totally independent of utility suppliers.

How Can You Use Solar PV Technology to be Independent of Utility Suppliers?

You need an “Off-Grid” solar PV system for the job. The name “Off-Grid” means that you do not have any connection to the utility supplier. Off-grid solar power systems are not connected to the main grid in any way. It helps you to generate the amount of solar power you need at your home and store it in batteries for later use.

Usually, the average household power consumption is around 300 – 400 units a month. This amount is for using the essential appliances like refrigerators, water heaters, and other electrical appliances you use in your day-to-day life.

For an average household, you need around 3000W of solar capacity to power the house for a whole month to be totally independent of the utility supplier.

All that you need to build a 3000-watt solar power system is given in the list below.

  • Solar panels to suit the specifications of the 3000-watt inverter
  • 3000-watt inverter
  • MPPT charge controller aligning to the voltage level of 3000-watt inverter
  • Batteries to power your house for a day

We know that solar panels are used to convert solar power directly into sunlight. But we cannot use the power generated by solar panels because it is DC (Direct Current) power. The power provided by the utility supplier is AC (alternating current) power. All the appliances we use in our day-to-day life are designed to work for AC power. DC power is completely useless because we cannot use it.

Therefore, having just solar panels is not enough. The most important component of an off-grid solar PV system is the component that converts DC power into AC power. We call it the inverter. In our case, for a 3000-watt solar system, we need to use a 3000-watt inverter.

How Do You Design an Off-Grid Solar PV System with a 3000 Watt Inverter?

As mentioned earlier, the most important component you need in your 3000 watts solar PV system is the 3000-watt inverter. It is the component that makes the power generated by solar panels usable.

The rest of the components should be designed to meet the specifications of the 3000-watt inverter. The number of solar panels, sizes of cables to use, the battery voltages, and connections are dependent on the inverter specifications.

When the solar panels generate solar power, it is important to store the excess to use later. We have sunlight only in the daytime. But we use electricity throughout the whole day. Even in the night. Therefore, how to generate electricity at night?

You cannot generate electricity at night because there is no sun. Instead, we can store the electricity and use the stored electricity at night.

To do that you need batteries.

How Many Batteries Do You Need to Connect with the 3000 Watt Inverter?

There are different battery capacities you can find in the market. The battery capacity is given in Ampere Hours (Ah). Ampere-hours is a way to denote how much electricity you can store in a battery.

The battery capacities vary from 50 Ah or lower to 200 Ah and higher. There are batteries of different voltages as well.

However, the inverters are designed to work at a particular voltage. If we assume that we have a 3000-watt inverter rated to take DC input at 12 volts, we need a battery with 12V at its terminals. 3000-watt inverter decides the battery connections. If the 3000-watt inverter is designed for 24V, then you have to connect two 12V batteries in series to make it 24V.

In our case, if we choose 50Ah as the battery capacity, we need six batteries connected to the 3000-watt inverter to store power to use at night. If you have 100ah batteries, you need 3 of them. However, the total capacity you need is 300ah.

It is important to note that this is for a 3000-watt inverter with 12 V DC input and a 12-volt battery.

The MPPT charge controller is the hub that connects the solar panels, batteries, and inverter. MPPT charge controller specifications also should go in line with the 3000-watt inverter we choose. MPPT charge controller controls the rate of charging for batteries to safeguard the batteries.

Using a 3000 Watt Inverter to Cut Down Your Electricity Bills

If you have the solar panels, batteries, 3000-watt inverter, and MPPT charge controller in place, you can stop using power from the utility grid ever again. You should know that this design is for households using 300-400 units per month. It is also important to note that there should be at least four hours of direct sunlight throughout the day.

Firstly, you have to place the solar panels on the roof or a place where there is no shade. Solar panels need direct sunlight for a good portion of the day. There are aluminum solar mounts designed for just the purpose.

The poles of the solar panels (positive and negative) should be connected with the MPPT charge controller. The MPPT charge controller needs to connect with both the battery output and 3000-watt inverter.

Finally, you can get AC usable power output from the terminals of the 3000-watt inverter. The power that is coming out of the 3000-watt inverter is regulated to increase power quality. That is a plus point to the 3000-watt inverter compared to the utility supply.

The 3000-watt inverter is the heart and soul of the 3000 watts off-grid solar PV system. Therefore, you need to find a good product with a good warranty for the job.

This is a DIY (Do it Yourself) project. You don’t need expert knowledge or people with technical expertise on the installation to install the 3000-watt inverter and all its components to build a good off-grid solar PV system.

You should find a good 3000-watt inverter for the job. In the market, there are different types of 3000-watt inverters. Find the one with a good warranty to make sure the solar system works for a longer period of time.

Off-Grid Solar PV is the Way Forward

Off-grid solar PV systems are the ideal way to move forward and answer all the issues related to fossil fuels. You don’t have to waste money on utility companies. You can simply have free electricity. On the other hand, you do not have to rely on utility companies to give you power. You will produce your own power.

Sustainability is the best and the only way forward. We cannot take chances anymore. Fossil fuel hurts the whole world and in turn all the people, the animals, and plants. Therefore, it is your responsibility to get rid of fossil fuels as much as you can and move into renewable power.
