Easy Maintenance Tips For Quartz Worktops

Posted by Kairuz Maria on April 30th, 2016

Lately, Quartz worktops have become popular due to the fact that they are stronger and less prone to stains compared to marble and other such traditional materials.

However, it does not mean that quartz does not get dirty. After all, in a kitchen it will surely come into contact with various materials that can affect its natural colour.

So, let us have a look at few methods to clean up quartz surfaces.

Keep it Simple

As quartz is less porous and less prone to stains and damages, you can take it easy. In most cases, simply rinsing with water and rubbing with a soft cloth should do the trick if you act quickly enough. This even holds good for acidic items such as juices, vinegar and ketchup. Unlike marble, quartz is highly resistant to acidic material and hence one should not be overly concerned with the same.

Use cleaners with low pH

High pH means highly alkaline materials. Many strong cleaners in the market have high pH levels as you can probably find out from the information provided on the wrappers. Such materials are highly damaging to quartz and should be avoided. Use simpler cleaning agents that have lower alkaline content. Just ask the people at the store counter in case you have a doubt about this.

Use a Plastic Knife

As quartz kitchen worktops are resistant to scratches and stains in general, in most cases it does not collect lasting spots. Generally the dirt remains on the surface level and can be cleaned with a bit of mechanical pressure., However, do not use metallic items such as knives or forks for this purpose as that can actually damage the surface. Get a plastic knife or other such material to scrape off the dirt from the surface. Wash with water and let it dry up.

Do not Bleach, Wax or Polish

As mentioned already, quartz is resistant to most of the materials that may leave marks and stains on marble and its types. It has a non-porous surface and of you can avoid spending much on wax or sealants. At the same time, you should also avoid strong bleaching agents or polishes as they tend to do more harm than good to the surface.  Milder detergents and dishwashing liquids should do the trick for basic cleaning. You can rub using buff cloths or scrubs but do not go too hard on the surface unless you are trying to remove a seriously hard stain.

The good thing about quartz is that it is highly resistant to various kinds of scratches and stains. But you should also keep in mind that being “resistant” to something does not mean that it is completely immune to the same.

It only means that it is less prone to impact. In order to be on the safer side, you should just use some precautions in the kitchen. For example, you can use a cutting board to save the surface from the impact of the knife and use coasters and other gears to protect it from the hot containers and utensils.
