Bathrooms are the most private space for every individual. We tend to spend a considerable amount of time here. It is a place where we can truly be alone.

Today, we give equal importance to bathrooms while designing a home. They are more spacious and aesthetically designed with tiles or marbles, quality bathroom fittings, mirrors, etc. But sadly, only a few pay attention to bathroom lighting designs like other rooms in the house.

The most common lighting is wall mounted fluorescent tube lights or LED lights and one or two task lights above the mirror. But contrary to the common ideas, there can be quite a few innovative bathroom lighting ideas that will completely change the look of your bathroom and make you want to stay there forever.

Bathroom lighting ideas

  1. Place recessed lights in the ceilings or just above the mirrors to reflect the light and provide overall illumination.
  2. We can divide the bathroom into two broad zones: the dry zone and the wet zone. We can further divide the wet zone into the shower zone and the toilet zone. Similarly, the dry zone can have the dressing zone and vanity zone. Each of these zones has separate utility and needs task lights specific to that zone.
  3. Use backlighting to highlight specific areas and create an aura effect in the bathroom. Fix these lights at the back of the mirrors, near the washbasin or in backlit panels.
  4. Use layered lighting to enhance the aesthetic beauty of the bathroom. Three different types of light - ambient, task and accent are used to provide general, utility and decorative lighting effects.
  5. LED lights are the most energy-efficient, low maintenance and hassle-free bathroom lights. It gives a lean and contemporary look to your bathroom.
  6. Theme lighting - You could implement theme-based bathroom lighting to bring some uniqueness to your bathroom. Some themes are:
    • Nautical
    • Wooden fixtured farmhouse look
    • Romantic
    • Geometric patterned modern look
    • Oriental
  7. You can use coloured LED bathroom lighting to illuminate shower heads, mixers etc to create a visually pleasing ambience.
  8. Many new plumbing lighting arrangements allow bathtubs, sinks and other bathroom furniture to have internal or side lighting. You can try them to give a unique style to your bathroom.
  9. Use Contour Strip lightings like John Cullen\'s Contour 9.6W IP rated LED strip that you can cut every 33.3 mm to illuminate the washbasin, the shelves and the mirrors in the vanity zone.
  10. Mood lighting a corner of the dry zone creates a warm atmosphere and does wonders to lift your mood. Pendant lights using yellow or warm lights are ideal for the bathroom.

Please remember:

  • Choose the lighting theme that best complements the tiles and the wall decor of the bathroom.
  • Place the ceiling lights at an angle so that the light does not fall directly over your head.
  • The bathroom lightings must be distributed evenly
  • Use opaque or frosted bulbs instead of clear bulbs
