Enhancing learners\' engagement with scenario-based e-learning

There are several instructional design theories and models to choose from when creating eLearning courses. Choosing the right one to meet the needs of your students or employees can often prove to be a challenge.

On the other hand, scenario-based eLearning may be the solution if you are looking for a model that is ideally suited for improving learner engagement.

The purpose of scenario-based eLearning is to immerse the learners in a real-life situation or simulation or in a learning experience that will allow them to acquire skills or information that they will use in the future.

Data presented in a context enables learners to manage it easily within their working memory and commit it to long-term memory.

Scenario-based eLearning Improves Engagement and Understanding

A variety of reasons can be attributed to why scenario-based eLearning improves learners\' engagement and comprehension of core concepts.

The following are just a few of the strongest arguments for using scenario-based eLearning:

1)     Motivates the student

Learning is motivated by students or employees knowing they possess the skills necessary to accomplish the task. They are allowed to build upon these specific skills.

As a result, they understand that they will face challenges but are aware that they have the tools to meet those challenges and overcome them.

2)     Challenges the learner without overwhelming them

The goal of a scenario based Learning activity is to challenge learners to the extent that they can expand their knowledge base without overwhelming them.

They will not give the effort necessary if they do not believe that they can successfully navigate the scenario.

As a result, scenario-based eLearning can provide them with realistic obstacles and problems that they will face in the real world to develop their skill sets and knowledge base while keeping them engaged throughout the eLearning process.

3)     The application of scenario-based learning

Usually, learners are immersed in group activities or role-plays in a traditional learning setting. They are exposed to situations they will encounter in the real world or at the workplace.

However, they can apply scenario-based learning techniques in various ways in an eLearning environment.

To help you design scenarios for your eLearning course, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

vInclude as much interaction as possible-

In designing the eLearning course, please include as many interactive elements as possible (as long as they are relevant, of course). Identify characters that learners can relate to, and allow them to choose the character\'s direction through questions and answers.

Create dialogue that will engage the learner and make the experience more realistic and immersive.

vMake sure that the context of the scenario is realistic and manageable-

The scenarios must be realistic and informative to prevent information overload yet remain simple.

Include elements that will provide learners with the greatest benefit and help them develop the necessary skills, but do not add in information or multimedia that will distract them from the overall goal: to gather information and retain it.

Wrapping it up -

Through scenario-based eLearning, you will have the opportunity to create eLearning courses that will engage your learners and provide them with the resources they need to enhance their performance and overall knowledge. These eLearning scenarios allow them to tap into existing skills and draw upon real-life experience to achieve a truly worthwhile eLearning experience in any environment.
