Are you new to rubber bands? Read this

We all loved cartoons once in our lives. The best thing about those cartoon characters was one extra boost that they had, like Batman and Robin, SpongeBob has Patrick, and our favorite Dora with boots. If braces were any leading character in these cartoon series, do you know what would be an extra boost for them? The rubber bands.

Rubbers bands and their working mechanism

Orthodontic rubber bands, also known as interarch rubber bands or elastics, help us to pull the jaw forward or push it forward to make the alignment better.

Patients taking treatments under Trophy club orthodontics, wearing braces will have rubber bands on each side of their mouth. The elastics are hooked onto brackets, they are attached to the top canines, and stretched to hook to the bottom of a molar bracket. The way cartoons had an extra boost with their sidekicks, rubber bands boost the power of braces, helping to keep the arch wire in place.

Initially, the orthodontists used small rubber bands like ligatures, which were to be changed by your orthodontist. The latest elastics need to be replaced multiple times a day even if they are not broken. This is a critical step, as rubber bands quickly lose their strength and elasticity as well. Besides, it is essential to wear your elastics twenty-four hours a day, even when you are sleeping, eating or drinking, or as instructed by your orthodontist.

While you get braces for the first time, the first week might be a bit difficult to deal with elastics, but with time, things are going to improve. You will be more comfortable with elastics. Elastics apply force to the teeth and bring them together for better alignment. With elastics, the teeth will start to move a little bit, but as soon as you remove the force, it begins moving back. To realign your teeth properly, you must apply constant force over a long time. That is why we always suggest our patients to wear aligners constantly. The elastics must only be taken out when they brush, floss, put new ones in, and occasionally eat.

Come to our orthodontist and we can give you various tips to wear the rubber bands properly. While you try to get comfortable with your braces, we will support you completely so that the entire phase becomes easy for you. Our orthodontist will guide you to wear elastics in a perfect way. For example, if you cannot place the rubber bands with your fingers, you can do it with the help of a plastic hook. The more you practice, the better it is going to be for you.

Besides, you can take up Corinth Invisalign any time you want. It is an easy option.
