A few tips of bearing braces for the first week

Posted by Kenneth Brown on December 31st, 2021

Imagining getting those braces in the mouth can be nerve-wracking, let alone having them practically put. Also, it is a moment of excitement because the treatment is for your own good. When you remove the braces, all you are going to see is a sparkling smile, healthy and properly aligned teeth. We have heard a lot about having those braces, but experiencing it practically can feel different. Most of the patients with our Pottstown orthodontist complain that the first week is the hardest. Once the first week has passed, everyone is back to the schedule.

Some of the tips from our Pottstown orthodontist to adjust during the initial days of braces are:

1. Do not leave with questions and concerns

When you take help from our Pottstown orthodontist to fit those braces, we would want to ensure that you do not leave our clinic without clearing your doubts. Although, we will give you all the information possible about the braces, and still if you feel that something is left, you should ask us right away. Do not leave our office with any kind of concerns in your mind.

2. Always be prepared with palliatives

The first week with braces is going to be difficult and painful. Before you leave the office of your orthodontist, ensure that you get some over-the-counter medicines prescribed so that you have something in hand when the pain goes beyond your bearable limits.

3. Eat what has been prescribed

With braces, you will have to be very careful with what you eat. You can eat everything only if it is soft and properly cooked. With braces, you must avoid foods that are hard to chew. If you want to make your life easy with braces in the next one year, make sure that you eat what you should.

4. Keep wax and saltwater handy

When your wires hurt, wax and saltwater help a lot. We know how it feels when brackets and wires rub on the soft skin and cause irritation. Over time, your skin will also adjust, get tougher, but until it happens, we would recommend that you use wax to add some comfort to your skin. Rinse your mouth or frequent gargles with salt water shall help to relieve pain and also allows the mouth sores to heal faster.

We know braces do come with some challenges and thus, many of our patients switch to Pottstown Invisalign, and it is a better option as well. However, you must qualify for this treatment without fail. If your problem is beyond the limits of Invisalign, you should get braces fit in your mouth.
