How to measure your windows for blinds

A savvy buyer looking to find the best deal on stores should do a little research. Stores like Walmart and Target tend to have competitive prices, but a limited selection of stores. The biggest advantage of going to a discount store to buy your blinds off the shelf is that you don\'t have to wait to get them. Pay them, take them home, and keep them.

For those who aren\'t limited by an immediate need to have something to cover their windows, there are rewards for shopping online. There are many retailers on the Internet that offer a wide selection of window treatments that can be purchased \"as is\", \"cut to order\" or made to order. You can also shop for prizes while at home on your skivvies enjoying a glass of wine or beer. It\'s much better than driving around town to Target, Walmart, Home Depot, or Lowes, and you can probably save money and gas. Internet purchases are “green” purchases.

If you are going to order vision blinds online, it is important to know how to measure your windows or doors. Carpenters have a saying \"measure twice, cut once\". In this situation, you might say \"Measure twice, pay once\". If you order custom blinds and order the wrong size you cannot return them so if you want to reorder you will be charged again.

If you are measuring for vertical blinds, here are some tips for getting the correct measurements:

When writing measurements, be sure to clearly note which number is the width and which number is height, and always include width before height (W x H).

Plastic or fabric tape measures that seamstresses often use to measure fabric, or in my case thighs, tend to stretch, so use a steel tape measure and measure 1/8 of an inch close.

Measure the width in at least two places and take the smallest width.

Depending on the width of the window, measure the height in at least two places and take the smallest height.

If you are measuring for a sliding glass door, they usually only use a one-way design.

The tracks for one-way draws are generally reversible.

Interior-mounted valances will not line up flush with the wall. They will extend across the room an inch or two.

Should I choose an indoor or outdoor support?

Decide if you will have an interior bracket or an exterior bracket before you measure your blinds.

An exterior bracket can help hide an unsightly old window.

Exterior support can make your windows appear larger.

An interior rack provides a more polished appearance.

If you prefer indoor mounting, make sure the window is deep enough to install the mounting hardware.

For indoor mounting, be sure to factor the height of the top rail of the blinds into your measurements.

How to measure an interior support: Measure the width at the top, center and bottom of the window opening and record the narrowest width. Measure the left, center and right height and note the shorter height. Please provide exact measurement when ordering your shades as they will deduct 1/16 to 3/8 inch in width and up to 1/2 inch in height to ensure the shades will fit the inside the window frame. Also make sure the window is deep enough for the mounting brackets.

How to measure for an exterior mount: Measure the width of the window opening and, if there is space, add at least 4 inches on each side to try and minimize exterior light leakage. Next, measure the height of the window opening and add at least 2½ inches to the height so you can fit the brackets over the opening and allow some overlap at the bottom of the window. If the blinds must hang down to the floor, make sure you have about ½ inch of clearance for them to open and close properly. When specifying the exterior mount no deductions will be made and the blinds will be cut to the exact measurements you provide.

Now that you know the benefits of buying vision blinds online - better selection, lower prices, and less hassle - and how to get the right measurements, you can pour yourself a beer or a glass of wine, sit in front. your computer and start browsing the best stores at the best prices. Oh! An additional tip is to measure first and drink later.
