Car Rental Using a Debit Card

So you want to rent a car in Miami, but you\'ve heard that you\'ll need a credit card, and you don\'t have one. Don\'t worry, you\'ll probably be able to rent in both North America and Europe, but you\'ll need to be cautious when selecting a car and a rental firm. You may also have to pay more, especially if you live in Europe.

Let\'s take a look at everything you should know about renting a car with a debit card.

Using Debit Cards in the USA

One of the most significant drawbacks of renting a car in the past (and also today in Europe) was that rental businesses only accepted credit cards. This was largely due to liability concerns, as well as the fact that the rental firm would merely place a hold on the card rather than really charging it.

Thankfully, this restriction was gradually lifted by the larger brands, beginning with Dollar. Debit cards are now accepted by several of the top rental firms. However, there are some instances where you will need a credit card, such as if you hire a van or a luxury car, or if you reserve within 24 hours of picking up the car.

Credit cards are still accepted by many smaller or local businesses. So, before you hire your automobile, make sure you find out.

It\'s also worth noting that American Express cards aren\'t always accepted by landlords. Many people, particularly Americans, would like to use these if they have them because they give insurance coverage. If you plan to use American Express, double-check before booking.

Keep in mind that most companies only allow debit cards to be used by people who have return flight tickets. Local tenants who want to pay with a debit card may be able to do so, but they may have to pass a credit check and/or show a utility bill. If the company accepts debit cards, there should be no limits if you\'re an international renter.

Finally, if you pay with a credit card, the deposit will almost certainly be a hold rather than a charge. When you use a debit card, money will be deducted from your checking account, and it may take up to a week for the money to be reimbursed back to your account after you drop off the automobile. Just keep this minor distinction in mind if you don\'t want it.

Paying in cash

Only a few select businesses in a select few locations accept cash as payment. Even when they do, a credit card is nearly always required for security. Unfortunately, if you do not have a debit or credit card, you will almost likely be unable to hire a car.

The big downside — coverage

Most credit cards issued in the United States, as well as several in Europe, cover rental automobiles. This usually includes rental cars in Europe as well for Americans.

As a result, if you use a debit card instead of a credit card, you will not be covered. This may require you to obtain costly insurance from the rental business instead.

If you plan to rent automobiles frequently, we recommend that you obtain a credit card as soon as possible.
