Chiropractic Health Benefits: Importance of Chiropractic Care

Posted by Perth Allied Health Clinic on January 20th, 2022

Chiropractic care offers many benefits to people suffering from varying health conditions. The benefits of chiropractic care include the reduction of pain and improved function of muscles. This is achieved by correcting the subluxation, or misalignments, in the human spine.

What is Chiropractic care and when an individual approaches Chiropractor?

A Chiropractor is a health care provider that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, and specifically spine problems. A Chiropractor has an undergraduate degree in this field and then completes four years of graduate school education. They also complete a two-year residency program to further their education. Furthermore, the field is constantly evolving with new advances in medical diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, rehabilitation therapies, etc. A Chiropractor\'s role is to identify the cause of pain or malfunction and make corrections that restore the body to normal function.

Importance of Chiropractic Care

The human spine is made up of interlocking vertebrae, which provide the main support for the full body. They are responsible for providing a strong and stable base while still allowing mobility in the arms and legs to perform daily life activities. When there is damage or an injury to one or more of those vertebrae, problems can arise that affect all parts of the body. Chiropractors will address these imbalances or subluxations by using their hands, called a \"thrust\", coupled with an instrument called an activator.

Common Issues which Chiropractors Address

1) Headaches & migraines - many times, migraines and headaches are a result of a pinched nerve in the neck. This problem could be caused by poor posture, an injury, or even an infection.

2) Low back pain - low back pain is often alleviated when people receive adjustments that alleviate pressure on their nerves and allow for proper functioning in the spine.

3) Neck Pain - neck pain may occur when joints in the neck become misaligned over time due to poor posture or repetitive strain injuries.

4) Shoulder Pain - shoulder pain can occur when the joints, ligaments, and tendons that stabilize the shoulder over time become weakened or damaged.

Common Chiropractic Treatments

Most common chiropractic treatment is a spinal adjustment. A spinal adjustment is the process of applying a force to the spine that removes interference with nervous system function. This interference can be caused by nerve irritation, or vertebrae that have shifted out of alignment. A physical exam will determine whether vertebrae are misaligned, or if the body (i.e., nerves) needs a spinal adjustment. Next, adjustments to the spine will be performed in order to remove interference and allow proper nerve functioning.
