The Secret to a Successful Bed Bug Treatment

Unwelcome visitors tick people off! Your home is a safe space—a place where you should be comfortable and away from harm. But what happens when unwanted housemates that bring distress lurk on the corners of your home, or worse, your bed?

Bed bugs are small, oval-shaped, brown insects that thrive on human blood. Because of their size, they can access narrow spaces such as belts and the hems of clothes which makes it easy for bed bugs to find a new breeding ground. People who often travel are possible carriers of these pests as they transfer from one place to another, having contact with several seats and couches (where they usually hide).

Unlike other insects, bed bugs do not have nests but instead live in groups. Their usual hiding places are spots like mattresses, bed frames, and headboards. As their number grows, the more they scatter.

Most bedbug bites start painless but gradually swell into itchy welts. An indicator of a bedbug infestation is when you wake up with multiple small insect bites and have bloodstains on your sheets from bed bugs you crushed while you were asleep.

Other signs of bed bug infestation are:

  • Bed bug excrements (dark or rusty spots)

  • A strong, musty insect smell

  • Small egg shells, or shed skins

It is important to take action right away if any of the signs are present. Remove all the beddings, check the seams in the bed frame. Check the areas near the bed, as well, for signs. This will prevent the bedbugs from spreading out, even more, making it harder for you to eliminate them.

Bed bug removal is not an impossible task. There are a lot of ways to eliminate these house pests. Firstly, it is important to thoroughly clean your belongings that you wore or brought with you while traveling. Have them washed and cleaned right away before having contact with other house materials. Secondly, keep your house clean and organized.

Getting rid of bedbugs starts with cleaning up the affected places. Here are the following methods:

  • Clean all beddings and linens in hot water and have them dried on the highest heat temperature possible.

  • Iron out the corner of your mattress and couches. Heat is an immediate bedbug killer.

  • Vacuum your bed, couches, and every corner near to the infested area/s.

  • Cover cracks in plaster or glue down unsealed wallpapers properly.

  • To prevent bedbugs from entering or escaping, cover your mattress and box springs with a closely woven, zippered cover. Because bed bugs can survive for up to a year without feeding, put the cover on your mattress for at least a year to ensure that all bugs are dead.

  • Organize your home.

If your mattress is contaminated, you may wish to replace it, but make sure to get rid of bedbugs throughout your home first, otherwise, your new mattress will be plagued as well.

Ultimately, it is still better and safer to have bed bug professionals do the job. They have the right equipment, skills, and experience to finish the job properly.
