How Meditation Can Boost Your Immune System

Posted by harry bird on May 11th, 2016

Just like science, it seems like meditation is able to provide an excellent solution to a wide range of issues concerning the mind, body, and our quality of life.

One groundbreaking discovery that is gaining ground is the fact that meditation harnesses the ability to boost your immune system. It may seem hard to make the connection, but believe it or not, this is the reality of how powerful meditation actually can be.

To put this cycle into perspective the following findings on how meditation can boost your immune system will give you a better clue.

1. Meditation stimulates the production of antibodies.

According to a controlled study, it was found that individuals who practiced mindful meditation on a weekly basis had a much higher concentration of antibodies than those who did not. The significance of antibodies in the fight against viruses and bacteria within our bodies cannot be taken for granted.

Another study conducted at the UCLA revealed that patients with HIV, who practiced meditation had a reduced rate of CD-4 cells loss. These cells are a type of white blood cell that fights infection and their count indicates the stage of HIV or AIDS in a patient.  Though this relationship is yet to be fully understood, the results are compelling.

2. Meditation stimulates regions of the brain associated with the immune system.

Meditation as a practice induces electrical activity in the prefrontal cortex, the right hippocampus, and the right anterior insula; sections of the brain. All of these aspects of the brain are directly involved in the operations of the immune systems. Through these specific parts of the brain, instructions to the immune system are transmitted.

All of the commands and instructions of the immune systems are issued here in the form of electrical impulses. These instructions are responsible for the efficient operation of the body’s defense mechanism. Meditation allows proper flow of this process to run it’s course effectively by removing distracting impulses.

3. The immune system biologically reacts to the state of mind.

Research indicates that the immune system is responsive to our thoughts whether positive or negative. The reason for this responsiveness is yet to be established. But what is really captivating is the fact that through meditation, an individual can provide a serene environment for the defense system to work efficiently. The peace of mind that comes with meditating is perhaps the reason it is so powerful.

4. Meditation helps reduce stress.

In this twenty-first century, stress has been noted to be a leading contributor to almost all body related illnesses. This is because stress causes a shutdown of critical body systems including the immune system. Through meditation, you are able to clear your thoughts and cultivate an enhanced sense of inner peace. Eliminating stress means leading a happy and healthy life. We free ourselves of perceived problems, hence improving the performance of the mind body connection.
