Are You Planning To Switch Off Your Heating Early This Year – And When Should YoPosted by Liz Seyi on April 11th, 2022 By this point, you probably won’t need our team here at PGS Plumbers to remind you of the big rise in energy prices that is set to take effect in the UK from 1st April, as a result of the lifting of the energy price cap by a whopping 54%. After all, it has been a massive topic of conversation among people not just in London and the South East, but up and down the country in recent months. The chances are, then, that you will have already thought yourself about the steps you could take to help reduce your domestic energy bills. And if you’ve decided that turning off your heating this year earlier than you normally would could be one such step, you’ll hardly be alone in that. According to recent research from Gas Safe Register – which is the UK’s official registration body for gas engineers and gas businesses – more than a third of homeowners plan to do exactly that to help combat the big energy price rises. Don’t neglect safety when you’re trying to save money! Worryingly, the same polling found that almost a third (31%) of respondents planned to skip booking their annual gas safety check this year, in response to the cost-of-living crisis. This is despite more than three-quarters (77%) of those quizzed being aware that regular servicing can help ensure the efficient running of gas appliances – which in turn, can be key to lowering household energy costs. So, never mind just the safety aspects – skipping a gas safety check can also prove a false economy. If this describes your situation, please do not hesitate to arrange for a Harrow, Wembley or Croydon heating engineer from PGS Plumbers to visit your home and make sure your gas appliances are in the best possible shape. So, is there an ‘optimal’ time in turn off your heating this year? The fact is, there isn’t one single moment, or even outdoor temperature, that should lead all of us to rush to turn the thermostat down. Much is likely to depend on your own circumstances and needs, so it’s important not to feel too much pressure from others in this regard. If there is such thing as an ‘optimal’ day to turn off your heating, though, you may be surprised to learn that this day might have already passed. According to a heating expert recently quoted by the Wiltshire Times, the best day for such a move this year may have actually been 27th March. The reasoning they gave for this was that many people “aim for the time when clocks go forward, which this year falls on March 27.” So, there you have it – a nice, easy guideline for determining when to possibly switch your heating off each year. But other factors – such as how well-insulated your property is – may also influence which date you decide to turn off your heating. If you have further questions about any of the above or would simply like to request free advice and a quote in relation to any of the heating or plumbing work we can do at homes like yours this spring and summer, please do not hesitate to contact PGS Plumbers today.
