Veterinary antibiotics have become an important part of keeping animals healthy, and despite the fact that they have been used in enormous quantities for decades, their presence in the environment has received little attention until lately. Antibiotic compounds have just recently been subjected to a more thorough research in order to identify the potential environmental concerns they may cause.

Anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, and other veterinary antibiotics are the most common product categories. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) serve as a link between the production and activity of prostaglandins (inflammatory enzymes). In companion animal care, approved veterinary NSAIDs are used to relieve the pain and swelling associated with osteoarthritis in dogs and horses.
