American Experience: Zoot Suit Riots in Montebello

It was august, 1, 1942 when a young Mexican aged 22 was murdered at a party in Los Angeles. This brutal stabbing of this man ignited tension in the minds of local Americans. The police called them “Zoot suiters “.

Based on their dress Police claimed they were responsible for terrorizing the city. Among the accuse seventeen Mexican Americans were convicted, even when there was no sufficient evidence. This turned the situation violent and young Mexican Americans turned rebellious and the city was in the grip of riots. The riots broke between service man and Mexican Americans.
