Have you missed your train with a confirmed train ticket and looking for a refund? Indian Railways has modified a few rules favouring passengers to get a refund for your missed train with some conditions. According to the new rules, if a connecting train is missed due to the previous train's late arrival, you are entitled to a full refund of the ticket price.

Trains can be missed due to various unfavourable situations. And you must be thinking about how to get a refund for the train you missed. So, let's find out what your chances for a refund are and how you can get the refund.

Indian Railway Reservation Rules for Missed Train

The Indian Railways has changed existing rules in order to avoid financial loss to passengers. This rule is for passengers regarding missing the trains. Passengers with confirmed tickets or connecting tickets now have the option of receiving a refund in case they missed the train.

Missed train with a confirmed ticket

If you miss your train with a confirmed ticket, you can't cancel the ticket as the chart has been prepared. In this case, you can only file TDR within one hour after the departure of the train from the charting station.

Missed a connecting train

There are two rules for passengers who missed the second connection train due to the late arrival of the first train.

The first rule claims that passengers who have reserved tickets for connecting trains and miss the next one due to the first one's late arrival will be refunded the full amount they paid for the IRCTC train ticket booking. This rule is based on a few conditions; one is that the passengers will only be given a refund if they fill out the exact same information about themselves on both tickets. In addition, the starting point of the second ticket and the destination point of the first ticket must be the same.

In the second rule, passengers can change their boarding station if they miss their first train. This rule applies only if the passenger changes the boarding station four hours before the train's departure when the charts for a train are created. Passengers will not be able to change boarding stations once the chart has been created.

Board the Train from Next Station

You cannot travel to another train with a confirmed train ticket if you miss the train, but you can board the train from the next upcoming station. As per rule, the TTE cannot assign your berth to any other passenger until the train passes the next two stops or within the next hour.

File TDR for Refund of a Missed Train

You can receive a refund from the railway for a missed train by filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) and mentioning your reasons for not travelling. However, you cannot cancel the ticket after the train departure because the chart has already been created. Therefore, you must file the TDR within one hour of the train's departure from the charting station.

How Will You Get a Refund if You Miss the Train?

If you missed your train and want to get a refund for your ticket, you need to file a TDR. TDR can be filed as per Indian Railway rules:

  • There will be no refund of fare on IRCTC train ticket booking with confirmed reservations if the ticket has not been cancelled or TDR is not filed online up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
  • There will be no refund of fare on RAC e-tickets if the ticket has not been cancelled or online TDR is not filed up to thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.
  • If, on a party e-ticket or a family e-ticket obtained for travel of more than one passenger, some passengers have confirmed reservations and others are on RAC or waiting list, a full refund of fare will be admissible for confirmed passengers, relating to the condition that the ticket is cancelled online, or an online TDR be filed for all passengers up to thirty minutes before departure.

Cancellation of Tickets

If you are thinking about cancelling your ticket after train departure, then this is not possible. You can cancel your ticket before train departure to get a refund. However, there are different railway reservation cancellation rules, time-slots and charges for the cancellation of IRCTC train booking in each stage:

IRCTC Ticket Cancellation for 3AC:

If the ticket’s cancellation request is initiated 48 hours before the departure of the train, cancellation charges will be Rs. 180 plus GST.

If you cancel your confirmed train ticket between 48 and 12 hours before your departure, the cancellation charges will be 25% of the fare plus GST.

If cancelled between 12 hours and 4 hours before departure, the cancellation charges will be 50% of the ticket fare plus GST.

IRCTC Ticket Cancellation for RAC:

Passengers with RAC e-ticket need to file the TDR to get a refund for missed trains.
