why FaceTime Audio might not be functioning

There are a number of reasons why FaceTime Audio might not be functioning, but the most frequent one is that your device or operating system is incompatible.

You can only make or receive audio-only calls using FaceTime if your smartphone is running iOS 7 or later, so if you don't have this operating system installed on your device, you won't be able to use FaceTime Audio.

This specifically applies to any iPhone (such as the iPhone 3) or first-generation iPad that is older than the iPhone 4 model.

You might also not have audio in FaceTime for the following reasons:

Your microphone is faulty or muted.
Your sound is too quiet.
The microphone is being used by another program.
Your iPhone is an old model.
your internet connection is having issues
What to Do if FaceTime Doesn't Have Audio
Until FaceTime audio functions, try these fixes in the order listed. gmail

Verify that neither you nor the person with whom you are speaking has silenced the microphone. To fix this problem, ask them to check and tap their microphone symbol. White will be the icon if it is muted (rather than grey).

Check to see whether you have muted your microphone if the person you're speaking to is claiming that they can't hear you.

Verify the volume. You should make sure your volume (or your interlocutor's volume) isn't all the way down, just like you should make sure your microphone isn't muted. Tap the Volume Up button many times until both you and your caller indicate that you can hear each other clearly to solve this issue.

Verify your mobile data or Wi-Fi connection. FaceTime depends on an internet connection to relay video and audio, so if your internet connection is unreliable, it can have trouble doing either feature.

The microphone is "busy," right? One potential cause of FaceTime audio problems is that another app is using your microphone while you're trying to make a call. For example, specific messaging and music apps require your device's microphone, so if you have them open while using FaceTime, you or your caller might not be able to hear anything. If this is the case, close any app that is or might be using your device's microphone, and then try calling again.

Make sure your microphone is operating properly. If you can't hear your caller or they can't hear you, both of you should check your devices' microphones. You can do this on an iPhone (or iPad) by opening Voice Memos and recording yourself speaking into the primary (i.e., bottom) mic. Also, with iPhones, you can check the rear and front mics (both at the top of the devices) by opening the Camera app and shooting a video (in which you talk) using the rear and the front camera.

If you can hear and record your voice using such tests, your microphone is working fine.

Restart your device. By closing all of the apps you have running, a normal restart could enable you to open FaceTime again and make a call with working audio. It's also worth getting your caller to try this, just in case.

Download and install new iOS updates. Often, new operating systems fix bugs or flaws affecting previous versions, which might have possibly been preventing apps like FaceTime from working correctly.

Factory-reset an iPhone or restore your iPad to factory settings. You can even perform a factory reset of a Mac. If you've tried all the methods above and FaceTime still doesn't produce audio, it's worth trying. Of course, before resetting your device to its default settings, it would be a good idea to back it up. gmail

Book an appointment at an Apple Store or an authorized repair shop. Again, you should do this if none of the above steps have worked. The only remaining explanation is that your device suffers from a hardware issue preventing its microphone from functioning normally.
