As a driving instructor it is important that lessons are properly structured so that you can make the best use of available time and make sure that the pupil is making their way via the syllabus appropriately. It is really helpful for trainee instructors to write out a lesson schedule using bullet points to ensure all main aspects of the topic are covered.

If it is your first lesson with as driving instructor training be sure you greet the learners and check their provisional driving licence. If they do not hold one, then you are not insured so don't ignore to check. Ask if they are stressed and try to put them at ease by discussing any issues they have, make eye contact with the pupil and be positive.

You should state the aims and purposes for the lesson. Make sure they are authentic and within the pupil's potential. A more experienced pupil would require a greater challenge to make certain there is a complete recap of the last lesson to set the benchmark for the current lesson. If no aims and objectives are mentioned then the trainee may regard the lesson as just driving about and wasting time.

If the lesson is related to a new topic, then a briefing might be required. Make certain the brief is pretty short as learners are usually enthusiastic to get on the move.

Once on the move it is essential to choose a route which matches the abilities of the novice and gives choices to cover the topic mentioned in the brief. Avoid tracks which are too busy or complex, but also avoid ones which are too easy for experienced pupils.

By the end of the lesson give an intensive debrief with plenty of pupil involvement. Finally, state the objectives and goals for the next lesson. This will give the trainee something to look ahead to and enables them to know where they are in the syllabus and what is needed to get prepared for test. It is essential that the pupil knows this as they may feel that an instructor is milking them for as many lessons as possible rather than putting them in for a test. This will not happen if a trainee is well-informed.It is the basic structure for planning a good driving instructor training.
