Disinfection and Sterilization; Maintenance of Biosafety Level

Biosafety level or BSL for short can also referred to as pathogen protection level, which is a set of systematic bio-containment precautions that are essential to isolate hazardous organic proxies especially in an enclosed laboratory or other similar facilities. The lowermost level of bio-safety measures may consist of just the regular hand-washing and using OTC sanitizers that are available in the market which act as a minimal protective equipment. But at higher biosafety level, precautions may include installations of airflow systems, multiple containment rooms, sealed containers, and sterilized personnel suits, safety practises for all procedures, extensive training on biosafety and enforcement of other high levels of security to control access to the facility and so on. Biosafety and sterilization go hand in hand, as the later is a process of cleansing and freeing of microbes and other similar harmful agents from the desired surface areas.  Sterilization as such refers to any process that removes, kills, or deactivates all forms of life, mainly targeting microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, spores, and unicellular eukaryotic organisms present in or on a specific surface, object, or liquid. Sterilization can be accomplished through various means, such as heating to a certain temperature, treating with chemicals, irradiation with UV or IR rays, applying very high pressure, and filtration methods. The process of sterilization is often confused with different forms disinfection, sanitization, and pasteurization. However the main difference is  that, those methods rather reduce the number of forms of life and biological agents present to an extent where they can be considered as harmless, but sterilization is a method where it totally destroys all the pathogens or other living beings making the surface or the object or the material free from harmful living beings, wherein the area  is referred to as being sterile or aseptic. In order to maintain such totally clean areas certain equipment has to be employed, so that the entry of unwanted agents can be averted.
