Clan Grant was one of the few clans that wasn't forced to leave their homes during the Highland Clearances. "Good Sir James" Grant (the Clan Chief from 1773 to 1811) purposely built the town of Grantown-on-Spey so that his clansmen would have a place to stay and wouldn't have to emigrate. While other Highlanders were being forced to leave because of the changing times, Sir James Grant was busy building an entire town; including schools, mills, factories, a hospital, and an orphanage. Grantown-on-Spey is a reminder of Sir James's loyalty to his clansmen.
According to one theory, the ancestors of the chiefs of Clan Grant came to Scotland with the Normans to England. The name is found soon after the conquest of that country, although some historians have asserted that the Grants were part of the Siol Alpin group of families who descend from Alpin, father of Kenneth MacAlpin, first king of Scots. The oral history of the clan and later recorded in writing for the clan chiefs instead recounts an origin from Norway before coming to the lands in Strathspey with Malcolm III.
The first Grants in Scotland appeared in the 13th century. They got the land of Stratherrick by marrying Mary, daughter of Sir John Bisset. From this marriage, came at least two sons. One of these sons was Sir Laurence le Grand who became Sheriff of Inverness. He married the daughter of Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan. She was descended from Donald III, King of Scotland.
Crest Description: The Craig Elachie, or "The Rock of Alarm", is a rallying point for the Grants. When signal fires are lit upon the summit of Craig Elachie, members of the clan would gather there in order to organise for an attack or defence.
Motto: Stand Fast, Stand Sure
Where did the Grant clan come from?
The name Grant has been an influential one throughout Scotland’s history but the exact origins of the ancient Clan Grant remain a subject of discussion. According to traditional oral histories of the Clan Grant, its origins may lie with the Viking, Haakon Grandt of Norway, who settled in Scotland around 960, after a brief stay in Ireland.
There are a few theories about where the Grants come from. One is that they descended from Kenneth MacAlpin, a 9th century king of the Picts, who became King of Scots. This legend also established the Siol Alpin (descendants of Alpin), a familial bond between the Grants, the MacGregors, and other clans. Another theory is that the Grants came from the south with influential Anglo-Norman feudal barons in the 13th century to establish their foothold in the vicinity of Inverness.
The Grant family has held land in Stratherrick, on the southeastern shores of Loch Ness, since at least the 13th century. Sir Laurence le Grant was Sheriff of Inverness in 1263. John le Grant secured part of Inverallan in 1316 – the first lands held by the Grants in their future stronghold of Strathspey. In the 15th century, Sir Duncan le Grant inherited lands in the barony of Freuchie, near present-day Grantown, thereby establishing the patrimony of future Lairds of Freuchie and Chiefs of the Clan Grant, which lasted almost five centuries.
