Roman and Vertical Blinds—Pros and Cons

Posted by Jason Norman on August 16th, 2022

These are two of the most popular choices for blinds in your home.  Roman blinds will give your room a modern, neat look, and are very versatile.  They are made from a variety of materials, such as cotton, linen, silk, and more.  The materials of these blinds are held down by metal support or rods.  When folded, they create a hobbled look.  In weight, they are very light or medium.  You open and close them with a chain so you can bring them down or fold them when you need to.

Vertical blinds are the usual treatment for sliding glass doors and patio doors.  Some use them for large picture windows.  You can choose to have them stack to the right, left, or parting down the middle, which will allow you to customize their placement but still keep your outside view.  They are made of durable PVC material, but you can also get them made of faux wood or fabric for a soft touch.

As with most things, blinds included, there are pros and cons with each one.

Roman blinds

Pros

  • They are classier and more sophisticated looking.
  • Offer a wide variety of styles, textures, materials, and colors.
  • Superb privacy
  • Energy efficient as Roman blinds can help to keep your heat in or out
  • Affordable because they do not need much time and material to manufacture
  • They are easy to operate as you have the choice to open and close them with a cord or motorized

Cons

  • There is no light control as they do not have slats so you cannot rotate them to let any light in without your privacy being compromised.
  • Not moisture resistant so they are not suitable in rooms that gather moisture like your kitchen or bathroom. Steam from the bathroom could result in mold and mildew growing or grease or cooking odors could get trapped in the fabric.

 Vertical blinds

Pros

  • Vertical blinds have thick slats so they block the UV lights efficiently.
  • Gives you ultimate privacy when close
  • Easy to use as you can partially open them to get in and out of sliding glass doors without getting caught in the blinds
  • When you use long vertical blinds, they can make a small window look larger.
  • Tall windows and doors look more sophisticated since they cover the entire width and length
  • If a slat is damaged you can easily replace
  • Wide variety of choices of color and materials

Cons

  • When they are open or closed, they can be noisy as the slats swing together and collide. This can happen with a fan or wind blowing in their direction.
  • They can get dirty quickly

Conclusion

Both are exceptional choices for window coverings in your home.  Look at where you need the blinds to help you decide which would work best there.  Then take time to weigh out the pros and cons.  Visit a store that sells Roman and vertical blinds so you can compare them side by side before you make your final decision.
