5 Factors To Consider Before Getting Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is the surgical procedure used to correct an eyelid. The upper and lower eyelids have different treatments. This procedure may include fat removal or redistribution near the nose in the corner of the upper eyelid or just beneath the eye in the lower eyelids. This procedure is approximately one hour per eyelid and requires four to six weeks for recovery. Here are some factors you should consider before deciding to get surgery.

What makes me a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Your doctor may take you as an eligible candidate if:

  • Your upper eyelids are puffy because of extra fatty deposits.

  • Loose or sagging skin impacts the upper eyelid’s natural contour, which can sometimes blur your vision.

  • You have bags under your eyes, droopy lower eyelids or excess skin, and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid.

  • Your overall health is good.

  • You are not a smoker.

  • You do not aim for perfection, just realistic improvement.

Risks involved with this procedure

  • Scars

There will be a scar after the operation. Usually, these scars go away after 8 to 12 months. Occasionally they may become wide or thicker and might require another surgery.

  • Bleeding

Although uncommon, bleeding into the wound or the eye socket is possible, and you might need a blood transfusion, another surgery, or even both to stop the bleeding. Usually, it occurs right away or shortly following surgery. It is crucial to control high blood pressure, and your surgeon will discuss any medications that raise your risk of bleeding before the operation.

  • Infection

It can be cured with antibiotics or may require surgery according to severity.

  • Asymmetry

Temporary blurry vision or blindness. Allergic reaction to anesthesia, tapes, or solutions used during operation

Are there any pre-operative steps I need to take?

  • Since aspirin interferes with normal blood clotting, it is best to avoid taking aspirin or aspirin-containing medications for two weeks before surgery.

  • Smokers should cut back as much as possible for at least three weeks before surgery and stop at least three days beforehand to lessen postoperative coughing and bleeding.

  • Let your doctor know if you are experiencing any eye issues, specifically dry eyes with recurrent soreness, infection, or excessively watery eyes. This way, they can examine your tear film before operation.

  • You should not apply cream or makeup to your face.

What to take care of during recovery?

  • Get plenty of rest.

  • Apply ice pack compresses to provide comfort and reduce swelling and bruising.

  • Sleep with your head elevated to 45 degrees to reduce swelling

  • Take prescribed medicines only

  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and smokers

  • Wear sunglasses to prevent sun exposure

  • Keep your blood pressure in check

How long does it last?

Many patients who have blepharoplasty report feeling more confident about themselves and claim they appear more youthful and rested. There are many different quoted times for the longevity of blepharoplasty. It mainly ranges between 8 to 10 years. However, there are also cases where it stays for a lifetime. It differs from person to person based on age, lifestyle, eating habits, and more.
