The alternator for Ford was designed to replace the 2G alternator, which was introduced by Ford in the early Eighties. The 2G alternator was an internally regulated unit that required an additional four-wire side harness to be installed on the vehicle. Because of this problem, Ford changed to a simpler design known as the 3G alternator. Because of its internal regulation, the 3G alternator does not require a side harness.
