Career Options in Law

With the rise of globalization and liberalization, the requirement of lawyers is also increasing. So, the job opportunities for lawyers are also escalating. The final decision is upto them i.e. to choose between service and practicing as a lawyer.

Positions in Government Sector

To acquire any of these posts, a professional degree in law from any of the Best Law Colleges in India along with a degree in Arts / Science / Commerce is a pre-requisite. Some of the positions also require prior experience.

Indian legal service hires for diverse posts as Legal advisors in the Department of Legal Affairs and Legislative Counsel in Legislative Department. These officers get promoted to the post of Secretary to the Government of India after attaining requisite experience.

Legislative counsels are also recruited in specific official languages - Wing of the Legislative Department for Hindi and Regional languages (Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Oriya, Urdu, Assamese, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu).

Similarly, officers possessing requisite legal and professional qualifications are appointed at state level too.

Law officers/ Legal advisors are required in all the departments/ministries/undertakings of the State Govts or Government of India. They are recruited via UPSC or State Public Service Commissions.

Furthermore the members of Law Commission, Public Prosecutors, Government Advocates, solicitors, Notaries and Oath Commissioners, Attorney General, Advocate general obtain the positions like legal secretaries in assemblies, workforce at higher/lower judiciary/Quasi-Judicial institutions, Judicial members in CAT, Income tax, Sales tax, Excise and other tribunals in accordance with rules and vacancies vacant.

Commissioned officers in the Indian Army, Air force and Navy.

Fresh Law Graduates can fill the positions against non-gazetted posts which are equivalent to the designations like Assistant in the Secretariat, such as Legal Assistants, Legal/Judicial Translators etc.

Judiciary

In the Judiciary, for the designations like Magistrate/Munsif or Sub-Judge personnel is recruited via public service commissions. These are the lowest judicial cadre posts which sometimes are looked after by High Court. One must have a professional degree in law from any of the Top 10 Law Colleges in India, apart from a degree in Arts / Science / Commerce.

Age Limit - 35

Relaxation - For special categories as per the rules:

Magistrate supervises criminal court

Munsif/Sub-judge deals civil cases.

They get promoted to the positions like District and Sessions Judge

They may also be shifted to the office of a Judge of the Supreme Court/High Court

District and Sessions Judges are appointed via competitive examinations which are conducted by High Courts or State commissions.
