The founding motto of the Christian Medical College in Vellore (CMC), "Not to Be Ministered Unto, But to Minister," was adopted in 1918. The Christian Medical College Vellore Association, a recognized society of more than 50 distinct Indian Christian churches and Christian organizations that serves more than 225 hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries across India, is responsible for its formation and regulation.

It is an autonomous, non-capitalist educational institution that serves a Christian minority and enrolls students from around India. The college seeks to enhance human health and well-being through clinical practice and teaching and foster healthy communities.
