4 Ways Data Science is Improving Environment Innovation

Posted by rohit rohi on September 7th, 2022

Data science is one of our most effective tools for locating and evaluating complicated problems, creating solutions, and monitoring progress. People use big data and artificial intelligence (AI) every day to assist research, get valuable insights for businesses and society, and address some of our most challenging problems, such as maintaining the health of our planet.

Data science and artificial intelligence (AI) are assisting in the advancement of significant environmental projects, from climate monitoring to wildlife protection and connecting people with nature, even though the technology isn't the only solution to the issue.

Here are four ongoing environmental benefits of data science that we'll be discussing.

#1: Creating a digital version of Earth to transform climate forecast

In this example, a "digital twin" is, first and foremost, a virtual representation of the land, water, air, and life on Earth. "Destination Earth," a project spearheaded by the European Union, simulates human and natural activity to track the state of the planet.

The planetary-scale digital model will gather ongoing, real-time data and offer exact forecasts regarding climate change, Earth's resources, extreme weather conditions, and natural disasters (such as fires, storms, droughts, and floods).

Over the next seven to ten years, Destination Earth (also known as DestinE) will gradually deploy. The objective is to give decision-makers, the scientific community, and other users a way to assess various scenarios and better support environmental and sustainable development strategies.

#2: NASA should speed up scientific researc

Who is the data owner? NASA.

NASA's data holdings are "increasing at a geometric rate," including an estimated 100 petabytes of Earth science imaging alone, the agency claims in an article. A million gigabytes make up one petabyte.

The NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS) combines artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning with high-performance computing to make sense of it. In order to facilitate data exploration and visualization for scientists, scientific research must be sped up.

Projects including landslide detection, surface water monitoring for reservoir management, and habitat suitability prediction are being accelerated by scientists and engineers supported by NASA.

#3: Using AI for Wildlife Protection, Ocean Cleanup, and Other Purposes

Through its AI for Earth program, Microsoft provides scientists and research institutions with access to AI and machine learning technology. AI for Earth, which was established in 2017, gives out grants to fund initiatives related to the environment, agriculture, biodiversity, and water.

Ocean Cleanup is one such initiative. The project concentrates on lowering marine plastics, which endanger animals such as seabirds, whales, fish, and sea turtles and cause many other issues.

Using AI, Ocean Cleanup simplifies the time-consuming process of identifying debris in tens of thousands of pictures. In order to collect plastic for removal, the initiative aims to connect the recognition system with an autonomous collection device.

#4: Bringing People Closer to Nature

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like The Trust for Public Land (TPL) exist to encourage and connect people with nature.  Since its founding in 1972, the non-profit organization has been committed to establishing parks and safeguarding land.

TPL collaborated with RS21 to leverage big data to more quickly analyze the subtleties of how neighboring communities use park developments. TPL, municipalities, urban planners, and other stakeholders can see and evaluate park use and decide which park upgrades will have the biggest impact using aggregated mobile data.
