Food Trailer ? A Great Option to Start a Good Business

Food trucks have evolved as one of the trendiest options to treat your taste budsand if the numbers are correct, this is a trend that will survive the test of time. The food truck scene has expanded rapidly in Australia over the past few years with more and more new food trucks popping up every day.  However not all of them succeed. Those that offer great quality and taste coupled with a one-of-a-kind appeal hold the edge over others that hurl out half-hearted preparations in hopes of cashing in on the fad. Street food has always been popular, attracting young and old food lovers eager to try out something new or looking for a quick, in expensive meal. Yet, over time, the food truck business has evolved. Competition today can be cut-throat, and only the smartest, business-savvy operators survive.

Food Truck or Food Trailer?

So you have decided to start a mobile food business, but you are undecided whether to choose a truck or a trailer from which to operate your business.  There are pros and cons of both.

If you are looking at starting a food truck business, choosing a vehicle is a major decision when pursuing your dream. In a food truck, the kitchen is attached to the vehicle. This gives you the freedom to drive around and manoeuvre your way through crowded markets and festivals more easily. If you plan to change locations frequently, it may be a better choice.

Food trailers require towing but have other significant advantages over trucks. Many people starting a mobile food business opt for a food trailer over a truck as with a truck the size of your kitchen is restricted to fit onto the truck’s chassis.  A trailer however can be built more or less as big as you like, as long as your vehicle has the capacity to tow a trailer of its size.

The primary consideration when making the decision between a food truck or food trailer is cost. Trailers are always cheaper than a truck of similar size. The expenses are not limited to the initial lease or purchase amount. Maintaining a food truck can be more expensive than a regular vehicle. Often food trucks are built from second hand trucks that have seen significant mileage. They tend to guzzle more fuel as well. Even if you completely overhaul the engine, you can’t guarantee that the vehicle won’t cause you trouble. Overhauling the engine and other mechanical parts are expenses you could do without when starting a new venture.  If you do decide to choose a food truck over a food trailer for your mobile food business, investing in a brand new truck can be a smart business decision.  Whilst the initial outlay is considerably greater, you will be thankful in the long run that you’ve invested in a reliable vehicle from which to operate your mobile food kitchen.

If a food truck has a serious breakdown, a visit to a garage could shut down your food business for several days. With a trailer, if your vehicle fails you, you have the option to rent a car or borrow one to tow it. Since it can be detached, you can park your vehicle somewhere else. Or have your other half or a friend tow your trailer to your location. They can then drive off and go about their day while you do what you do best – cook and sell food that you love.
