Stefano Donnarumma: the professional biography of Terna’s CEO and General Manager

In addition to his roles as Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Terna Group, Stefano Donnarumma is President of GO15, the association that brings together the world's leading electricity transmission infrastructure operators. With more than 25 years of working experience, he has long and vast experience in the industrial management sector, in particular in production and infrastructure contexts both at a domestic level and on international projects.

Stefano Donnarumma's career

In his current roles at Terna, Stefano Donnarumma leads the Group in line with the main goal of ensuring Italy's power supply and enabling the entire national electricity system to function. The company manages in fact the high voltage Italian transmission grid and plays a central role in the transition of the electricity market towards the use of environmentally friendly sources. Born in Milan on 29 October 1967, Stefano Donnarumma graduated with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1993. The following year he was entered onto the Register of Engineers. Soon after, he started his professional path working for several foreign multinationals, including Ruetgers Automotive, TMD Friction, Bombardier, and Alstom. For approximately 13 years, he had the opportunity to work in the production of automobile/railway components and rolling stock, while also managing major railway vehicle manufacturing plants in Italy. In 2007, his career continued at the Acea Group, where he served as Executive Chairman of Acea Distribuzione (electricity distribution network of Rome) and Director of Acea ATO2 (integrated water service of Rome city and province). After 5 years he moved to the Aeroporti di Roma Group - a subsidiary of Gemina and later merged into Atlantia - in the role of Airport Management Director and Accountable Manager of Fiumicino and Ciampino Airports. He was also Director of various companies belonging to the Aeroporti di Roma Group.

Subsequently, Stefano Donnarumma continued his professional path at the A2A Group - a listed multiutility company based in Milan and Brescia - where in 2015 he took on the role of Network Management Director, with responsibility for the distribution of gas, electricity, water, district heating and public lighting for the Group's companies. While at A2A he was also Chairman of the companies Unareti S.p.A., A2A Calore e Servizi S.r.l. and A2A Ciclo Idrico S.p.A., and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Group LGH S.p.A. In 2017 he moved to the Acea Group S.p.A. - a listed multiutility company that manages public service infrastructure in Italy - to served as Chief Executive Officer of the Group. This was his last professional role before becoming Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Terna Group, an appointment he received in May 2020. The largest independent electricity transmission system operator in Europe, the company is the owner of the Italian transmission grid for high and extra-high voltage power and has a public service role: it ensures in fact the country's power supply and enables the entire national electricity system to function. Operating in the context of energy transition, Terna plays a central role in this process and ensures ever better integration of renewable energy sources, as well as the gradual decarbonisation of the system.
