WoTLK Classic Gold will release new content more often to curb the decline of players

World of Warcraft will receive frequent updates to combat the declining number of players as well as combat the growth of free-to-play games, Activision and Blizzard have stated.

The news was announced last night that this subscription-based MMO dropped 1.3 million players in the last three months which suggests a decline in the interest of players by players from East. World of Warcraft now has about 8.3 million players.

Speaking to investors during the company's annual conference call for the quarter Activision's CEO Bobby Kotick spoke of a need to tackle the evolving online marketplace, while stating his belief that Activision continues to make investments in its lengthy subscription MMO.

"It's crucial to be aware that the way we play internet-based games have changed and the online gaming environment is becoming more competitive, particularly in free-to-play games" Kotick said. "To tackle this issue we're working hard to bring out new content more often to keep players interested longer, and to make it easier for players who have fallen off the game to get to the game. We are convinced of the long-term benefits of this series as well and we will devote significant budgets towards World of Warcraft."

Since its introduction in 2004 World of Warcraft has seen many updates in addition to four fully-fledged expansion packs. The Burning Crusade in 2007; Wrath of the Lich King in 2008, Cataclysm in 2010, and Mists of Pandaria in 2012.

"We're exploring ways to help ease the transition back to the game for players who have returned," added Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "We've always seen players join and depart from buy WoTLK Gold. The process of smoothing that transitional phase is something we're analyzing as we adapt our strategy to the player's behavior and their preferences."
