What is the Best Way to Design a Safety Playground?

One of the most important ways to prevent injuries on the playground is adult supervision. According to research, lack of supervision is responsible for nearly half of all playground injuries. For this reason, parents are encouraged to watch over their children when they are on 안전놀이터 equipment. Pediatrician and researcher Julie Gilchrist focus her work on preventing childhood injuries. She has worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Injury Center for over 20 years and now serves as a consultant.

Protective barrier

Protective barriers are a critical component in a safe playground. These barriers must keep children off the ground, out of the traffic lane, and away from animals. A good barrier should also prevent children from wandering off and leaving the play area unsupervised. A barrier can be made of a natural or man-made material. These barriers can be in the form of dense hedges, walls, or permanently anchored dividers.

Infill

Infill in a safety playground is the foundation for a safe surface, and it is one of the key elements for a successful safety playground design. It is crucial to select the right infill material for the play space because the surface needs to be resilient enough to absorb impact. The right infill material can reduce the risk of injuries, and it can also add visual appeal to a play area.

Guardrail

A guardrail is an important safety feature for a playground. It prevents children from falling through open spaces on the playground, which can lead to injury. Falls are among the most common injuries that occur in playgrounds, so it's important to make sure that your playground is safe for children of all ages. You should place the guardrail at a height that's appropriate for the children who will be using it. For example, if the 안전놀이터 platform is higher than twenty inches, it should be enclosed by a guardrail. Otherwise, it is a good idea to keep it at a height of 30 inches or lower.

Non-rigid component

A safety playground with a non-rigid component is an ideal playground design for children. There are three components to such an installation: the footing which anchors the equipment to the ground, a guardrail that encloses the elevated platform to prevent falls, and infill that prevents a child from passing through an opening. Loose-fill surfacing material consists of loose particles such as sand, wood fibers, or shredded rubber.

Guardrails

Guardrails are essential for a safe playground. They prevent children from falling through openings, which is one of the most common playground injuries. Guardrail heights should be at least three feet higher than the highest piece of equipment, and they should be a minimum of six feet wide. The height of the guardrail should depend on the ages of the children who will be using the playground. For instance, a 20-inch-high platform should have a guardrail around it, while a thirty-inch-high platform should not.

Bolt ends

Bolt ends are a common hazard on playground equipment and should be avoided. Bolt ends with sharp edges are a choking hazard for children. When possible, make sure that the bolt ends are rounded. Bolts that have exposed threads are also a safety hazard, as they can impale children and become entanglement hazards.

Sharp edges

Sharp edges and protrusions on playground equipment can cause serious injuries to children. When the edge of a swing set is too close to the ground, a child can trip or become pinned between the swing and the ground. To prevent injuries, playground equipment should have guardrails installed on any elevated surface over 500mm. Other safety measures include removing any trip hazards and providing shade.
