The original Diablo exceeded expectations in every way. The Schaefer brothers claimed that they had envisioned it selling 20.000 copies that would have been enough to create the sequel. It was sold more copies than this, and it helped establish the D2R Items genre that is highly popular nowadays.

The Schaefers and Brevik quit Blizzard following Diablo was released, and then began to build new studios and work on new projects. Brevik was in a variety of roles at various studios during his post-Blizzard career. One of his most prominent posts was as director of Gazillion Entertainment, which made Marvel Heroes. He later launched his own studio, Graybeard Games, which is currently developing an AR game called It Lurks Below. This week the game was released for Xbox One, in addition to PC.

Max Schaefer now heads up Echtra Games, which is creating the recently delayed Torchlight Frontiers, while Erich Schaefer later created Double Damage Games, which was released as Rebel Galaxy in 2018.

Brevik said he sees the ARPG genre as one with plenty of room to expand and change over time. He said he can foresee elements from ARPGs and MMOs becoming a new kind of game , one that's social and empathetic, with players coming together to fight bosses with a raid style and other cooperative elements. The developer said Gazillion tried to achieve a portion of this in Marvel Heroes, but unfortunately that game was shut down at the end of 2017.
