Helpful Tips to Identify Whether You Need A Wisdom Tooth Removal

Posted by Lynnwood Dental Studio on October 15th, 2022

Wisdom teeth, or the third molars, are the last permanent teeth to erupt in your mouth, typically between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people don’t develop them, and others have theirs come out without causing issues. However, emergency wisdom tooth removal may be necessary when they cause pain or have become impacted.

Your dentist can tell if wisdom teeth removal is necessary. Even if the teeth are not causing any pain, your dentist may extract them for preventive reasons. This way, you won’t have to worry about them becoming impacted or stuck. A dentist may also remove healthy wisdom teeth to prevent problems down the line since they can become more challenging to extract as the bones in the mouth get harder as you age.

Do I need wisdom teeth removal?

An emergency wisdom tooth removal may be necessary when it causes problems or your X-rays show they might do so in the future. Here are more instances where extraction may be best:

  • Damaging other teeth – The third molars could push the other teeth around and cause bite problems and pain.
  • Sinus problems – Wisdom teeth problems could cause sinus pain, congestion, and pressure.
  • Jaw damage – Cysts could form around your third molars; if left untreated, they could damage nerves and hollow out the jaw.
  • Inflammation – Gums or tissue around wisdom teeth can swell and become challenging to clean.
  • Alignment issues – Impacted wisdom teeth can crowd other teeth and might make treatment with braces necessary.
  • Cavities – Swollen gums can result in pockets between your teeth, inviting bacteria to grow and making you more prone to developing cavities.

Your dentist will look out for those signs and determine if you require emergency wisdom tooth removal. You may also want to watch out for those symptoms and make an appointment with an emergency dentist near you to prevent further problems.

Check with your dentist.

Only your dentist can decide whether you need wisdom teeth removal. They will also consider your age, the position of your teeth, and the shape of your mouth to make an informed decision. Emergency wisdom tooth removal may also be conducted during your regular checkup, especially when the dentist thinks it’s necessary for infection control.
