Cinema lovers woke up on October 2, 2022, to sad news of Rahul Koli, a budding child actor having unfortunately passed away at the age of 15. The young talent played a significant role in the Gujarati film “Chello Show” (Last Film Show), which is celebrated in the news for being India’s official entry to the Academy Awards (Oscars) 2023 under the category of Best International Feature Film!

Upon diagnosis with leukemia, Rahul for the past four months was under treatment at a Jamnagar hospital. Family sources confirm the child’s condition to have deteriorated post a recurring fever that continued to stay despite of his treatment procedures. Koli was then admitted to a cancer hospital in Ahmedabad where he breathed his last on the 2nd of October, bidding goodbye even before his much awaited film could release.

According to a report by his father Ramu Koli, an auto-rickshaw driver, “Rahul was eagerly awaiting for the film’s release. It could change his world, he knew. But fate wanted something else from him. He couldn’t watch his film which is slated to release on October 14th.” Rahul was the eldest of three siblings to his parents who earned their living through daily wages. With his untimely death, the Koli family succumbs to unbearable pain.

The grieving father recalled his son having watched the trailer with much delight. And was keen to catch it in theatre. Ramu Koli also recalls the film-makers and their timely assistance and help through their dark times. Nalin, the director of the film, even considered shifting the ailing child’s base to Mumbai for advanced treatment.

Rahul gave his audition for the role of Manu, a close friend of Samay, the main character in a Jamnagar audition where he was selected from a government school.

The film narrates the story of a nine-year old boy in Gujarat and his love affair with cinemas, replicating Nalin’s own life in a way. Set in a rural village of Gujarat called Saurashtra, the film features Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta in lead roles. Produced by Roy Kapur Films, Jugaad Motion Pictures, Monsoon Films and Chello Show LLP, the film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June last year.

In 66th Valladolid Film Festival in Spain, the film won Best Picture. It enjoyed a good run and earned worldwide from numerous film festivals including Audience Award at the 44th Mill Valley Film Festival, bagging the Golden Spike Award. Also nominated for the Tiantan Award at the 11th Beijing International Film Festival. The film is slated to release on the 14th of this month. Prior to its big official release, the film will be screened at 95 theatres across India with ticket priced at Rs 95. This is to celebrate the film’s entry into the 95th Oscars.

While Chello Show continues to win hearts from numerous film festivals across the world, Rahul Koli’s passing will remain a sad memory, a permanent void for his loved ones.
