FAQ On Applying For an Investment Visa in Hong Kong

Posted by Brian Chung on June 13th, 2016

Hong Kong offers a special visa for entrepreneurs who wish to migrate there. Known as 'Entry for Investment', it is aimed at foreign entrepreneurs who want to relocate and operate their own business in HK. Also called 'investment visa', it is essentially another form of work permit issued to a business owner as an ‘employee’ of his or her company in Hong Kong. If you are interested to apply for this type of visa, here are answers to frequently asked questions that you must know before you proceed:

  • Is my business qualified?

Your eligibility for this visa depends on your business. If you can prove that your company can make a significant contribution to Hong Kong's economy, then your chances may be better.

  • Can I bring my family?

You are allowed to bring any unmarried dependent children who are under the age of 18 and your spouse to Hong Kong under this investment visa. You are eligible to apply for permanent residence, too.

  • How long will this visa last?

The entrepreneur visa is valid for one year and you can renew it as long as your business stays viable.

  • What are the investment requirements?

There are no minimum requirements for investments, but authorities will examine your business plan to make sure that it is sufficient. Hence, be sure that the proposed investment will cover your start-up and operational expenses for at least three to six months.

  • What are the eligibility criteria for the investment visa?

The entrepreneur visa application is sponsored by a local individual or company, which will take the onus of assuming the responsibility for your repatriation in case such an event may occur. Be sure to incorporate your Hong Kong company before applying for this visa.

You are eligible if you do not have any security objections and criminal records, and if you have a good educational background. You must have an undergraduate degree in the field that is relevant to your business. If you do not have that, you should provide documentary evidence of relevant professional abilities, good technical qualifications, experience, and achievements.

You must prove that your business can contribute substantially to Hong Kong's economy by showing that it can create jobs for locals and that it will utilise the services of local manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and other relevant companies. Moreover, you must demonstrate that your business can contribute to the market or industry where it belongs.

  • What are the required documents?

Be sure to submit the completed application form, a copy of your passport's personal particulars page, a copy of your identity card in Hong Kong (if any), a copy of proof of your relevant working experience and academic qualifications, and a copy of your company's appointment letter or employment contract. You must provide a detailed two-year business plan, a copy of the business registration certificate from the Inland Revenue Department, and a copy of proof of overseas residence.
