History Behind DNA Facial Recognition Testing

In the Market Leadership section, researchers have done extensive research on facial Recognition and Face DNA test but never with an eye toward the technology's early days or what the future may hold.

Facial Recognition Begins in the 1960s

Woody Bledsoe,  Helen Chan Wolf, and Charles Bisson were the first pioneers of face recognition. Bledsoe, Wolf, and Bisson started working on computer-based facial Recognition in 1964 and 1965. Although the technology of the time severely limited Bledsoe, Wolf, and Bisson's early efforts in facial Recognition, they nonetheless represent a crucial first step in demonstrating the technique's viability.

Facial Recognition Accuracy Improvement - the 1970s

Following up on Bledsoe's original research, Goldstein, Harmon, and Lesk continued the study in the 1970s and expanded it to incorporate 21 distinct subjective indicators, including hair color and lip thickness, to automate identification. The measurements and positions had to be calculated manually, which proved to be very labor-intensive but still a development over Bledsoe's RAND Tablet technology.

Facial Recognition Using Linear Algebra: 1980s/90s

We didn't make any further strides in developing facial recognition software as a practical biometric for enterprises until the late 1980s. Sirovich and Kirby started using linear algebra to solve the face recognition issue in 1988. A system called Eigenface demonstrated how feature analysis of a group of facial photos might provide a set of fundamental traits. Additionally, they showed that less than 100 values were necessary to correctly code a normalized face picture.

Program FERET - 1990s/2000s

Early in the 1990s, the Face Recognition Technology (FERET) initiative was launched. Creating a database of face pictures was part of the project. The test set had 2,413 still-face photos of 856 individuals.

Vendor Tests of Face Recognition - the 2000s

Early in the new millennium, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) started conducting Face Recognition Vendor Tests (FRVT) and Face DNA test. Based on FERET, FRVTs were created to provide impartial government assessments of prototype and commercially available facial recognition systems. 

2006 Face Recognition Grand Challenge

The Facial Recognition Grand Challenge (FRGC), established in 2006, has as its primary objective the promotion and advancement of face recognition technology intended to assist ongoing face recognition initiatives within the U.S. Government. The FRGC assessed the most recent facial recognition algorithms. The experiments used high-resolution facial pictures, 3D face scans, and iris photos. The findings demonstrated the improvements in facial recognition technology over the previous ten years, with the new algorithms being ten times more accurate than face recognition algorithms from 2002 and 100 times more accurate than in 1995.

Social Media: 2010 to the Present

Facebook started adopting facial recognition technology in 2010 to assist in identifying persons whose faces could appear in the pictures that Facebook users upload regularly. The news media immediately found the feature contentious, which led to a flurry of pieces on privacy. However, most Facebook users didn't seem to mind. More than 350 million photographs are uploaded and tagged using face recognition daily, with no discernible adverse effects on the website's popularity or use.
