The Effects of Contextual Climate on Conflict Interaction and Conflict Interaction on Climate

In order to understand the reciprocal relationship between contextual climate and conflict interaction, it is first important to individually analyze the two terms. Contextual climate means the climate or the atmosphere during the time of conflict or conflict management. Climate can be referred to as 'the prevailing temper, American Christians And Atheists attitudes and outlook of a dyad, group, or organization' while conflict interaction is the communication and interplay which is conducted in order to resolve a conflict during conflict management. Thus, when there is a situation of a conflict between the two entities, the resolution depends greatly on the degree of the climate and the affected interaction. The contextual climate and conflict interaction is therefore closely associated as one affects the other.

In their study of climate and interaction, Folger, Poole and Stutman assert that communicative behavior is significant during the conflict management, as it depends on this behavior that either the climate becomes destructive or constructive. When a conflict is being settled between the two parties or individuals, it is through the means of communication that the conflict is resolved or in some cases becomes worse, due to ineffective communication behavior. Communicative behavior directly affects the climate of the conflict, if the behavior of the conflicted parties is supportive and friendly then the conflict would be automatically shaped according to that, whereas if the behavior of the parties is unsupportive then either the conflict will become worse or will not be resolved. On the other hand, if the behavior of one party or the two is uncommunicative, then the conflict will persist, as it is only communication via which negative or positive change can take place. The climate in which parties to a conflict are attempting to manage the conflict will be more constructive when their communicative behavior is non-defensive whereas the climate in which parties to a conflict are attempting to manage the conflict will be more destructive when their communicative behavior is defensive.

There are various types of non-defensive communication behaviors which can enable to create a healthy and suitable environment or climate during the conflict management. A conflict management can be constructive when non-defensive communication behavior is adopted. This behavior refers to many different qualities such as the quality of 'being descriptive rather than evaluative'. This quality means that parties in conflict should not be criticizing and assessing the behavior of the other party, as this would not help to resolve the conflict. Something that will help in this case would be the quality of being explanatory. The party should rather explain its stance, which would clear its position in the conflict to resolve. On the other hand if the parties are defensive, they would give an account of evaluation and critical views over the behavior of the opposite party. This strategy would not in any way result in resolving the conflict; it would rather make it worse.
