What should you know about LED drivers

While many people who use the LED light bulbs, led down lightsor any other LED based illumination solution know that these LED based lightings can't function without the LED drivers, but very few understand that why the LED drivers are important and how they function.

LED drivers are also known as the LED power supplies and can be compared to the transformers for the low-voltage bulbs, or the ballasts for the fluorescent lamps.  The underlying function of the LED drivers is to provide the electricity that the Led lights need in order to function and deliver their best performance. The LED drivers are required to regulate power and respond to the changing needs of the LED lights, LED circuits. An Led driver can, thus, be regarded as the self-contained power supplies whose output perfectly match the electrical characteristics of the LED based lighting products. In the absence of a driver, an LED light may become unstable or too hot, leading to failure or poor performance.

Types of LED Drivers

There are majorly two types of LED drivers – internal and external drivers. The internal LED drivers are the ones which are supplied and fitted within an LED light while the external LED drivers are those which function separately and are generally required to power bigger LED lights.

The LED bulbs being leveraged for domestic uses usually contain an internal LED driver as it makes it easier for an LED bulb to replace the conventional CFL or incandescent lamps easier. These are the LED bulbs with standard plug-in or screw-in bases. On the flip side, the LED lights which typically need an external driver include LED Down Lights, cove lights, tape lights, outdoor rated lights, LED light panels and certain types of LED fixtures.

Sometimes, the LED stops working much earlier than its stipulated lifetime and the reason for this may be a faulty led driver. So, if you have an LED light which has not completed its average life span, you can try replacing the external LED driver instead of the entire light to check whether the light has some issues or the driver stopped working. In most of the cases, the driver is faulty and thus, you can save a significant amount of money.
