The Step-By-Step Process for a Canada PR Visa

Step 1: Complete the ECA 

The first step requires you to obtain the ECA report for proving that your educational credentials are on par with the standards for education in Canada.

Step 2: Take a Test for Language

You are required to prove your proficiency in English as Canada is predominantly an English-speaking nation. If you are proficient in the French language, you can choose French as well as Canada has both English and French as its official languages. You can offer test results of ILETS for English.

Step 3: Create your Profile Express Entry

You have to create your online profile in Express Entry System after confirming your eligibility for one of its 3 immigration programs.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

Federal Skilled Trades Program

Canadian Experience Class

Step 4: Apply for the PNPs (not obligatory)

You can also apply for any of the Provincial Nominee Programs. If you receive a nomination from a PNP for Canada PR Visa, you will obtain 600 extra CRS points. This will make it easier for you to obtain the Invitation to Apply.

Each Canadian province has its cluster of immigration programs independent of the federal immigration programs. Some of the PNP streams are linked with Express Entry while the majority of them are not.

Step 5: Obtain an ITA

If your CRS score is equal to or more than the cut-off for the specified draw, you will receive the ITA.

Step 6: Complete Police and Medical Clearance 

You will have to obtain the medical and police clearance report for completing the Visa application process.

Step 7: Application Assessment

Once you complete all the steps in the application process, your PR visa application will be assessed by the Immigration Officers of Canada.

Step 8: Get COPR 

You will receive the Confirmation of Permanent Resident –COPR if your application is accepted upon assessment.

Processing Time

Processing of a PR Visa does not have an exact processing timeline. Express Entry applications for FSWP are usually processed within 6 months. For CEC and FSTP it can take around 6 to 8 months.
