Posted by Nationwide Immigration Services on December 5th, 2022

Indians apply for Canada PR from India in thousands on a yearly basis and the reason is quite evident. Canada Permanent Resident Visa is among the highly popular Visas for immigrants globally. It is a multiple-entry Visa having a validity of 5 years that authorizes its holder to reside and work in Canada indefinitely.

Canada PR Visa holders can apply for citizenship of Canada after staying and working in Canada for 3 years. The Government of Canada has launched several immigration programs for aspiring candidates to obtain a PR Visa.

The Eligibility Requirements for the Canada PR Visa

Candidates seeking to qualify for the Canada PR Visa process have to:

  • Obtain a minimum of 67 points out of a total of 100
  • Be working in an occupation that is included in the National Occupational Classification of Canada
  • Secure the minimum score in IELTS
  • Possess adequate funds for supporting their expenses in the preliminary days after landing in Canada
  • Offer necessary documents like proof of employment, work experience, language proficiency, educational certificate, etc

The Documents Required for the Canada PR Visa Process

You will require the following documents for the processing of your Canada PR Visa application:

  • ECA / Educational Credential Assessment Report
  • Test results for proficiency in language – IELTS
  • Documents for educational credentials
  • Documents for proof of identity
  • Evidence of funds such as statements from the bank, etc
  • Certificate for Police Clearance
  • Medical Certificate
  • Authentic Passport

The Step-By-Step Process for a Canada PR Visa

Step 1: Complete the ECA

The first step requires you to obtain the ECA report for proving that your educational credentials are on par with the standards for education in Canada.

Step 2: Take a Test for Language

You are required to prove your proficiency in English as Canada is predominantly an English-speaking nation. If you are proficient in the French language, you can choose French as well as Canada has both English and French as its official languages. You can offer test results of ILETS for English.

Step 3: Create your Profile Express Entry

You have to create your online profile in Express Entry System after confirming your eligibility for one of its 3 immigration programs.

The Express Entry system is among the highly popular options for immigration to Canada. The reason is that it processes PR Visa applications within 6 to 8 months. The program is designed for attracting skilled workers from across the world for catering to Canadian labor market demands. It has 3 economic immigration programs:

Federal Skilled Worker Program

FSWP is for skilled overseas workers with a minimum of 1 year of work experience.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

You must possess a minimum of 1 year of work experience in a trade such as industrial butcher, electrician, etc in order to qualify for FSTP.

Canadian Experience Class

CEC is for skilled overseas workers with a minimum of 1 year of work experience in Canada.

Step 4: Apply for the PNPs (not obligatory)

You can also apply for any of the Provincial Nominee Programs. If you receive a nomination from a PNP for Canada PR Visa, you will obtain 600 extra CRS points. This will make it easier for you to obtain the Invitation to Apply.

Each Canadian province has its cluster of immigration programs independent of the federal immigration programs. Some of the PNP streams are linked with Express Entry while the majority of them are not.

PNPs are used by the PNPs for nominating skilled workers, entrepreneurs, business people, and unskilled workers for PR Visas. The selection is based on the labor market demand in the province. Further, applicants have to fulfill specific eligibility criteria.

Step 5: Obtain an ITA

If your CRS score is equal to or more than the cut-off for the specified draw, you will receive the ITA.

Step 6: Complete Police and Medical Clearance

You will have to obtain the medical and police clearance report for completing the Visa application process.

Step 7: Application Assessment

Once you complete all the steps in the application process, your PR visa application will be assessed by the Immigration Officers of Canada.

Step 8: Get COPR

You will receive the Confirmation of Permanent Resident –COPR if your application is accepted upon assessment.

Processing Time

Processing of a PR Visa does not have an exact processing timeline. Express Entry applications for FSWP are usually processed within 6 months. For CEC and FSTP it can take around 6 to 8 months.
