During the side-impact airbags provide an added layer of protection for the occupant of the vehicle. While they do not replace the blowout panel in most cars, they do offer a more comfortable ride and can help reduce head, neck, and shoulder trauma in an accident.

History of airbags

The first airbag was developed by an industrial engineer, John W. Hetrick, in 1951. His idea was based on a compressed air system. In two-vehicle crashes, the head-protecting side air bag reduced the nearside fatality risk. This effect was strongest when the crash partner was a pickup truck. However, SUVs and sedans showed no benefit.

When tested in a two-vehicle crash, the torso-only side air bag did not reduce the risk of the driver. It did, however, show a lower risk for 16- to 64-year-old female drivers.

They reduce head, neck, and shoulder trauma

Generally, Side Impact Airbags is smaller than frontal airbags, and they inflate more quickly. This can lead to injury to people who are close to the airbag. Nonetheless, they are expected to protect drivers and passengers in side impacts.

The United States National Transportation Safety Administration (NTSA) has studied the risk of death to drivers in side impacts. It determined that the risk was lower when the driver's primary impact was in the lateral direction. Despite these findings, current motor vehicle safety standards do not directly address positioning issues. Specifically, they do not specify how the seating position affects the transfer of load from the torso to the chest.

NASS data were also used to analyze 187 occupants with airbag deployments. Injuries to the occupants' limbs and chest were more common than injuries to the occupant's head. Approximately 62 of the 187 occupants were in a side impact.

They're safer than basic airbags

Compared to basic air bags, Used Side-Impact Airbags reduces the risk of death in nearside impacts. Among drivers aged 16 to 64 years, those with side air bags were associated with a nearly 15 percent reduction in risk. For female drivers, however, this risk reduction was not significant.

They were also effective for drivers with four doors and were not affected by the type of vehicle. Similarly, they reduced the risk of fatality in front/rear impact points, which are defined as clock positions 6 and 12 in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

In two-vehicle crashes, cars with head/torso side air bags had the lowest nearside driver death rates, while those with torso-only side air bags had the next lowest. In a field study, a similar decrease was observed in child occupants. Among children under the age of 15, those in the back seat of a passenger car were not at risk.

Although the side air bags inflate very quickly after the crash begins, it is possible that the initial deployment force can be harmful. To minimize the harm, the authors recommend that drivers sit with their chests at least 10 inches away from the steering wheel. They also suggest that drivers use a seat belt to prevent sliding under the airbag.

They're harder to identify than the blowout panel
