When most people think of family law, divorce is the first thing that comes to mind. While this is a very big part of a family law practice for a number of reasons, attorneys that specialize in this area of the law are skilled at handling a diversity of cases. Professionals skilled in this arena can help clients navigate some of life’s stickiest situations.

Family law practices may vary somewhat in their areas of practice, but here are some of the most common specialty areas within this broad umbrella:

  • Divorce – Even in the most amicable of divorces, having an attorney look over the paperwork to ensure an equitable outcome can prove critical. An attorney can help in drafting that paperwork, filing it with the court and by providing any other assistance required to navigate the legal system.
  • Property division – If there are assets involved in a marriage, it can sometimes be difficult for couples to come to an agreeable division. This is where an attorney can assist in helping ensure the fair and equitable division of assets acquired during a marriage. Keep in mind that assets acquired prior to a marriage or those inherited or received as gifts do not count for division during a divorce in Texas.
  • Child custody and child support – These two topics tend to go hand-in-hand and often do require legal assistance to address. When a Texas family lawyer is on a case, he or she will work diligently to resolve visitation and custody disputes with the best result for the client and the child or children in question. This includes negotiating fair child support payments, if applicable.
  • Contractual alimony – Texas courts cannot under the law order alimony. They can award spousal maintenance payments for a set duration and contractual alimony may also be included in a divorce settlement. Contractual alimony is an agreement included in a divorce decree that is made by both parties independently.
  • Wills – Many family law firms also offer this service as a matter of course. Drafting wills, powers of attorney and physician directives, among other documents, is a common practice as is the willingness to review these documents on clients’ behalf.

Family law attorneys specialize in a number of practice area all meant to help clients address some of life’s stickier topics. From divorce and child custody to the creation of wills, a good Texas family law practice can help clients navigate a diversity of legal issues that may crop up over the course of their lifetimes.
