6 of The Best Songs by The Beatles You Should Download

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you probably have heard of, if not head the Beatles. They are regarded as one of the pioneers and influential bands in rock and roll history. With an impressive discography, there are some classics from the band that everyone should know, even if you aren’t a fan. So, here are six songs from the Beatles that you should listen to and download.

A Hard Day's Night

Even though this song was at the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic for more than 50 years, it's still hard to get two people to agree on what chord the famous "clang!" at the beginning of the song is. But with one majestic and mysterious Rickenbacker distress call, the Beatles we saw on The Ed Sullivan Show four months earlier were gone.

They were older now. The song's title suggests that the boys were tired of being stuck on a crazy train that they would never be able to get off of. In the first scene of the same-named 1964 movie, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are being chased by a crowd of screaming, hungry fans. This is more than just a pop song; it's a cry for help.

Yesterday

How does a two-minute acoustic song with the working title "Scrambled Eggs" become more than just a song and become a pop culture icon, a kind of Mount Rushmore?

Maybe it's because this sad ballad, whose melody is said to have come to Paul in a dream, has a universal theme about lost love. The rest of the band didn't want to release it at first, and some still don't like it. But the song's beautiful pain hasn't changed much in the years since it was written.

While My Guitar Weeps Gently

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps," George Harrison's first truly great Beatles song, started out as a mistake, but it was a planned mistake. Harrison wrote most of the song music while the Beatles were in Rishikesh, India, from February to April 1968.

He wrote the song's words after the band got back to England. Inspired by I Ching's idea that everything is relative, Harrison took a book off a shelf in his parents' house, opened it to a random page, and wrote a song around the first words he saw, which were "gently weeps."

(It might have come from Coates Kinney's well-known 1849 poem "Rain on the Roof," which has the lines "And the sad darkness gently weeps in rainy tears.")

Strawberry Fields Forever

Everything about John's mesmerizing psychedelic gem was enticingly strange: the chirping mellotron-flute intro, which was calm and synthetic; the bipolar chorus, which was a part downer and part anthem; the dense pileup of guitars, sitars, strings, horns, and other random sounds, including John's mumbled "cranberry sauce," which was famously misheard as "Paul is dead."

The slightly slurred, slow-motion lyrics seem dreamy, but they hit close to home: "No one I think is in my tree/I mean it must be high or low" speaks to anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or just really high. It came out as a single, and the other side isn't bad either.

Something

This sweet love letter was first released as a double single with "Come Together." George Harrison was the first member of the band to write A side, and it was one of his biggest commercial and critical hits. Elvis Presley, James Brown, and Smokey Robinson all sang it, and Frank Sinatra once called it the best love song of the last 50 years. It's up there, for sure.

She loves you

Pure joy: about falling in love and becoming the most popular band of 1963. "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" was the chorus that couldn't be stopped. In a clever way, "she" stood for the band's growing number of female fans, and "you" stood for the band itself. The song was a loud way for them to celebrate their growing success in the pop world. If you have a love like that, you should be happy.
