Highlights of The History Of The Wuppertaler SV

The truth is that this team has been in existence for several years, and a city of 400,000 is unable to get behind their team.
The soccer scene in Wuppertal generally followed regional boundaries, since the city itself was only founded in 1929, as the result of a merger of various independent towns, such as Elberfeld, Barmen, Vohwinkel, Cronenburg, Ronsdorf etc. Each of these towns had their own clubs, however Barmen was generally seen as the strongest in the 1930s.
A number of clubs were destroyed during the war of. After the restart, there were several mergers. Eventually, with encouragement by the mayor, two clubs that were the most prominent formed WSV: In 1954, the members of district clubs TSG Vohwinkel and SSV Wuppertal voted to band together under the name of Wuppertaler Sport Verein.
WSV was a decent second division team during the 1950s and 1960s. WSV often played in the Oberliga West, a top-flight regional league. The club's famous climb to the Bundesliga was initiated in the late 1970s. They finished fourth in its inaugural season 72-73, and was admitted to the UEFA Cup. At the time, their most famous player was Gunter "Meister" Propper, who scored a record 52 goals in the 1972 campaign. The future was promising, however the team grew old and was replaced by only mediocre players. After 3 years, WSV was relegated back to the 2nd division, where they remained competitive for a while before dropping again.

The subsequent history has been anything not all that great, as the club barely missed the bankruptcy deadline in 1998 and was merely trying to hang on in the 3rd division with the hope of sneaking into the 3rd division structure, which was merged and the DFB was forced to adopt prior to 2000.
Following the bankruptcy mess The 98-99 season was again one of "promises" of management and bold promises that were not kept. The team was still a mess the place for a good portion of the time, and occasionally play brilliantly. However, the last laugh came when the league voted to kick WSV's ass out and forcibly relegate them due to their inability to pay the required fees. WSV dutifully won the Oberliga in the next season and, after further financial mishaps, was finally allowed to play in the playoffs for promotion. They failed again yet another time in an endless string of failures. In the first year, WSV won the title but then fell apart during the promotion playoffs. The next two years were a struggle for them to finish second to the "amateur" squads of Bundesliga teams, before they eventually secured automatic promotion in 2003.
WSV has basically bummed around with their billions of fans across the globe. Every now and then the club will throw fans a bone like in the 2007/08 DFB Cup, when they beat Hertha BSC by 2-0 before they faced Bayern Munchen. Such was the demand for tickets, the match was moved to Schalke. A sell out crowd of 61,000 witnessed WSV beat Bayern 2-2 at half, before getting rolled 2-5.
It was painful to watch the first 3.Liga season. It's hard to believe that 35 years have been passed since the Bundesliga was established.
Things got even worse. The year 2013 was the year that WSV was bankrupt, and the members were battling management. A fan-driven initiative dubbed "WSV 2.0" brought all parties interested in the cause. It intended to kick out the long-running management of Friedhelm Runge, which saw the club continue to decline. The effort was successful, and the first step was to enter administration and voluntarily drop down the 5th division. This was the lowest in club history.
