TikTok Data Privacy Settlement - Million Class Action Settlement

Posted by invest on January 17th, 2023

TikTok is a social media app that has been in the spotlight recently for its invasive data collection practices. According to a lawsuit, the company has improperly collected and shared user information with third parties. Moreover, the company has been accused of collecting biometric data, such as facial recognition, without the users' permission. In addition to the lawsuit, TikTok has also been under the scrutiny of the Federal Trade Commission. The company has also been accused of using data to create content recommendations.

While the company has denied these allegations, it has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over its use of personal data. According to the settlement, TikTok will stop collecting and sharing users' biometric data with third parties. Moreover, it will not send users' biometric data outside of the U.S. If TikTok does collect and share users' personal data with third parties, it will be required to give notice to them. Moreover, the settlement will provide users with a mechanism to prevent such a transfer. Users will also be able to remove their account from TikTok.

In addition, the company will also be obligated to erase any information about a user that it does not want to retain. It will also be required to provide users with opt-out options for certain data sharing. Additionally, it will be notified if it sells a user's personal information.

The TikTok settlement came about after the company faced 21 complaints and lawsuits over its data collection practices. According to the settlement, TikTok improperly harvested user information from draft videos, films, and draughts. Moreover, the company used an "advertising ID" that allowed it to track users' locations.

The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. According to the settlement, the company violated the Video Privacy Protection Act, the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, and other consumer protection laws. Consequently, the court approved the million class action settlement.

If you are an Illinois resident and have a TikTok account, you may qualify for the settlement. However, you must fill out a claim form by March 1, 2022. Once you submit your claim, you will receive the sum of 92 million dollars. You will then have the opportunity to choose the payment method that you wish.

TikTok's settlement offers a large amount of compensation to users who have been victims of the company's illegal data collection. Although the settlement will benefit a great number of people, you must act fast to ensure that you are able to receive your benefits. As a result, you must be aware of the process to claim the payments and how to file a complaint.

To claim your share of the funds, you must sign a consent to the settlement's terms and conditions. Additionally, you must agree to Insider marketing emails. Finally, you must agree to the company's privacy policies.

If you wish to object to the settlement, you can do so by writing a letter to the court. Alternatively, you can simply exclude yourself from the class by January 31, 2022. After this deadline passes, you will no longer be able to make a claim.
