Privacy - You first need to take the respective person to a private place such as a bathroom, where she can discreetly change her diaper. It is extremely important to protect her privacy and maintain dignity. Also, ask her to hold onto something sturdy for support.

Supplies - Take out a fresh diaper for old age along with cleaning wipes. Lay them out in a dry and clean place. You may also need fresh clothes for the concerned person in case she may have soiled hers.

Self Protection - Put on a pair of disposable vinyl or latex gloves to protect your hands from excreta. Also, if the older woman you are helping out is ill, you must also wear a mask and a gown for protection against communicable diseases.

Positioning - Ask the person to stand up and take the support of something sturdy. This is needed when you have to remove the old diaper and for cleaning up. However, when you have to actually put on a new diaper, the best initial position would be sitting and then standing up, as that will offer better balance.

Clean Up - Before you can put on a new diaper, remove any soiled clothes and the old diaper by simply tearing it off at the sides. Dispose of the latter in a dustbin. Now with gentle hands wipe any traces of urine and feces going from the front of the groin region toward the back. Pay special attention to the skin folds as these areas are more prone to breakdowns and therefore more infections if left uncleaned. Put on any ointment or cream if required.

Do the same for the other leg as well. Now ask her again to stand up with her feet apart and hold onto the support so that you can pull up the diaper and secure it properly so that there are no leakages.

Tape-style diapers for elders are easy to wear too. To help her wear it, simply ask her to take support and stay in an upright position with her feet wide apart. Now open the diaper, avoiding touching its inner area. Now check which side will come at the front and accordingly put it between her legs and secure the tapes at the waist. Position the diaper well to prevent leaks.

Dressing Up - After you have put on the new diaper, re-dress the woman appropriately. If you had moved her gown or skirt out of the way, smooth it down or if you had removed the soiled clothes, help her put fresh clothes on.

Sanitize - Finally, help her wash her hands and then remove your disposable gloves and wash your own hands with soap as well.
