Key Properties of Inconel Pipe Fittings and Flanges

Why do we need pipe fittings? There are many important properties of pipe fittings.

An Inconel alloy is a high-temperature, corrosion-resistant steel alloy. For many years, manufacturers and consumers of industrial products have selected these alloys for their wide range of applications. The excellent corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, high strength-to-weight ratio, and good machinability of these materials make them ideal for various purposes. According to the Institute of Metals, each element in a family is named according to its order. Series 8 and 12 alloys are the most common alloys for Inconel 600. Even at temperatures higher than 800°C (1200°F), their corrosion resistance has been excellent for more than 50 years.

For more than 50 years, steel alloys 8 and 12 have been produced in the same family. Unlike Inconel 601, which is a nickel-based alloy and can be substituted for Inconel 600 without changing the type, the other two alloys cannot be interchanged. Their steels are non-magnetic inconel stainless steels without nickel content for use with Inconel 600. A steel’s magnetic properties are determined by its composition and nickel content. Pure vanadium (PV) steel, pure titanium (Ti) steel, and Inconel fasteners stainless steel with 0.5% to 1% of other alloying elements (ASTM B572) are three non-magnetic alloys. 

Vanadium steel is the most expensive of all non-magnetic steels, costing about --content--.15 to --content--.25 more per pound than Inconel fl600. Moreover, many end users who purchase non-magnetic 8Cr13MoV/V steel for bushings and other applications are unaware that those alloys contain other alloying elements than just nickel. Workpieces used as screw washers or nuts should have a thickness of 0.3 mm or less.

There are several alloys in the Inconel family. Construction, military, aerospace, automotive, and industrial applications all use it. It is extremely corrosion resistant and has high tensile strength. Additionally, Inconel is resistant to high temperatures and chemical attacks. Chromium (53 to 56%), nickel (16 to 19%), molybdenum (1 to 2%), and vanadium (0.05%) are the main alloying elements.
