The Evolution Of The Instagram Icon

Instagram amped up its logo game, a total of four times since the time that it was launched. Let’s take a quick look through those stages:

  • 2010

The logo of Instagram during the start was that of a polaroid camera along with a rainbow stripe. Instant photo cameras or polaroid cameras were popularly used in the 1980s to take quick snaps.

The polaroid camera was used back then as that simply symbolized photography and capturing memories, so it was a perfect fit for being a logo of Instagram. The logo was designed by the then co-founder and was deemed unique and really stood out from the logos of other apps.

  • 2010-2011

The logo that was designed did appear perfect but then Kevin decided to take the help of a professional to redesign it again. The photographer and designer Cole Rise was then hired to do the job of redesigning the logo.

Cole then took inspiration from the Howell and Bell camera and formulated a design for the Instagram logo. The newly designed logo was both minimalistic and attractive.

  • 2011-2016

The logo of 2011 was just an updated version of the 2010 one. The lens had been made much more glossier, and the edges were softened a bit. The text "Insta" was placed one the right side under the rainbow stripe (vertical). The 2011 version of the logo was a lot cleaner to look at and was more aesthetically pleasing.

Tip: If you want to download Instagram stories and carousels of others then there are many such Instagram video downloader apps available out there that allow you to do so.

  • 2016-Present

The present version of the Instagram icon that we see is nothing like the previous ones if you notice. It is drastically different. The new icon looks flat and also looks like it has been created with the "minimalism trend" in mind. The minimalism trend is all about making everything look effortless yet sleek, nothing too boasty.

While the new icon has totally changed the look, one important element of the logo has still remained the same - that is the camera.

This is totally my personal opinion but the new change Instagram icon looks much greater than all the previous Instagram icons. It is attractive and stands out amongst the rest of the app icons that are scattered around my phone's home screen.
