Building an Infrared Telescope Camera

Posted by Elite Internet Technologies on July 4th, 2016

Did you know that infrared cameras can successfully capture a wide range of light that cannot be seen by the naked eye? Infrared radiation isn’t usually visible, but with the right kind of telescope camera, you can see images that are on the infrared spectrum. This is done by removing the infrared filter on the camera.

Here are some steps for creating your own infrared camera:

Access the digital sensor by dismantling your camera. The body of cheap point and shoot cameras are typically joined together with glue. The more expensive cameras, like digital single lens reflex cameras, are often held together using screws. Carefully read the user manual of your camera to learn the steps for dismantling your specific camera.

Now, read the instructions for cleaning the digital sensor.

After that, locate the infrared filter. It is a square, small piece of plastic or glass that is fitted over the front portion of the digital sensor.

Now you need to remove the infrared filter. As mentioned above, some of the filters are held using a screw. You can use a small screwdriver for disassembling such cameras. If your camera is fixed using weak glue, you can use your fingernails to disassemble it.

When you have removed the infrared filter, reassemble your camera.

Attach the T ring in the front portion of the camera. You can purchase the rings from your camera’s manufacturer.

The next step is screwing in the T adapter the eyepiece of the telescope. If you do not have a telescope, you can buy a telescope and telescope kits online.

Finally, attach the camera with the T ring to the adapter. Make sure you do it in a way that it similar to attaching a long tele-photo lens. Ensure that there is no wobble between the telescope and the camera.

Now, you can see infrared images from great distances that are not visible to the human eye. To make sure you get the best image possible, try using Orion telescopes, which can be purchased at Telescopes.net.
