The Easiest Way to Improve Your Golf Swing!

Posted by Golf Lounge on March 20th, 2023

This is the easiest drill to practice to immediately improve your golf swing. It’s especially helpful for pitches and chips, but it’s also great for full swings with the irons and driver.

Most really bad shots occur when you hit it thin or fat. If you want to improve your golf swing, you have to learn to consistently hit the ball from a shallow angle of approach. If you hit the ball with a more level swing, you’ll hit the sweet spot of the club more consistently and avoid those deadly fat shots that kill your distance (and your confidence).

An old pro at a driving range near my house gave me the key to a smooth swing. Focus on hitting primarily with your left arm. That’s it.

For most (right-handed) golfers, the right arm is stronger than the left. Therefore, when we swing with both hands, the tendency is for the right hand and arm to overpower the left on the downswing. This throws off the timing between our arms and our shoulders.

To cure this, focus on swinging with your left arm, keeping your right arm loose, and just coming along for the ride.

Drill

Try this drill to get the right feel. Realize, it’s very hard to hit balls with only your left arm. You can try it, but this drill will have almost the same effect without the frustration of missing the ball.

Take all your practice swings with only the last three fingers of your right hand gripping the club. The thumb and index finger should rest very lightly on the golf club hamburg. This will force you to take the right hand out of the swing, and it will promote a much more even application of power from both arms.

Start with the putter, then move to chips, then pitches with a wedge, then to full iron shots. Lastly, do this with your driver, always trying to make your left arm do the work. Let your right arm rest and just hang on for the ride.

Practice this with various clubs without a ball first several minutes a day. Then, when you automatically swing with the left arm on all shots without thinking about it, go to the range and try hitting some balls. Your shots will be crisper and more solid.

Your ball flight will probably be a lot different now, but don’t worry. Concentrate on getting crisp, solid contact for now. Once you’ve grooved this swing, you can reintroduce the right hand to square the club face.

This drill helped me eliminate all my fat shots, especially on chips and short irons where the tendency is to hit down on the ball too much. Now, when I get too fast on my downswing and I feel my right arm overpower my left, I go back to this drill.

You can do this at home, on the range, or even on the golf course. You can even hit all your full shots with this type of grip while playing a real round.
