How to responsibly dispose of your wasted vapes

Posted by Heiwhite on April 4th, 2023

Did you know that annually, over 30 million tonnes of rubbish is collected from UK streets, which is enough to fill 4 Wembley Arenas? According to Defra government data, fly-tipping has increased by 16% in 2014 alone. In addition, worldwide, cigarette rubbish is the most commonly found type of litter. One of the most recent government data shows that the top UK trash item was small pieces of plastic and polystyrene (215 items per 100 metres), with cigarette stubs (46 per 100m) coming in second place, and food packets (39 per 100m) in third place.

As a vape user, it is crucial to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Whenever a cigarette butt is disposed of on the ground, over 600 carcinogenic chemicals are released into the environment. By choosing vaping over smoking, you can save an average of six trees a year from being destroyed, which amounts to around 352 trees over a lifetime.

As a responsible vaper, we can do more about improving the environment

However, you can further reduce your environmental impact by choosing eco-friendly vaping products. Disposable vapes, for instance, are an entry-level product that's easy to use and has a low initial cost, making them especially appealing for smokers looking to switching to vaping. But they're also the most difficult to dispose of properly as they create both plastic and battery waste. What’s more, the disposable vapes can also result in battery fluid, heavy metals, and nicotine pollution into the environment when they are used to landfill. It's crucial to dispose of batteries properly, either in one of the battery containers located around the UK or the one provided for customers near vape shops.

How to properly dispose of wasted vapes?

One of the biggest culprits of vaping waste is disposable vapes. While they may seem convenient and affordable, they are not a sustainable option. They produce both plastic waste and battery waste, which can harm the environment if not disposed of properly. It's crucial to remove the batteries in the correct manner, either by using battery containers located around the UK or by utilizing the ones provided by vape shops.

Fortunately, there are many more eco-friendly alternatives to disposable vapes. For instance, prefilled pod kits and refillable pod kits generate less plastic waste compared to disposables. When the e-liquid inside is finished, the pods can be replaced and recycled at a local recycling centre. The batteries in these kits can be recharged like a phone battery, further reducing waste.

Disposable vapes

There are a number of disposable vape brands to choose from such as Elf Bar, Elux Bar, Lost Mary, and Geek Bar. While disposable vapes aren't the most eco-friendly way to vape, the market is taking steps towards making them more sustainable. For instance, the Riot Squad Q Bar disposable vapes available at NewVaping are fully recyclable. There are also many alternatives to disposable vapes that are more eco-friendly.

Pre-filled pods

Pre-filled pod kits are a simple option that produces less plastic waste than disposables. When the e-liquid within is finished, you can replace the pod, and these pods can be recycled at your local recycling centre. The battery in these kits can be recharged whenever it runs low, much like a smartphone. Refillable pod kits are not only more cost-effective but also greener. They last longer than disposable vapes and, therefore, do not create as much waste. Although the e-liquid needed for refilling pods usually comes in plastic bottles, all e-liquid bottles are made using recyclable materials like PET.

Refillable vapes

Refillable tank kits also use e-liquid bottles to top up, but aside from these reusable bottles, the only part of these kits that you'll need to replace are the coils, which are often recyclable as they are made of metal and cotton. If your device uses removable batteries, you can find many disposable battery containers in places such as supermarkets, DIY stores, and at specialist vape stores.

Spares dispose

In addition to the various eco-friendly vaping options mentioned, there are also ways to dispose of other vaping-related waste responsibly. For example, coils, which are used in refillable tank and rebuildable atomizer devices, can be recycled as scrap metal. Similarly, e-liquid bottles can be recycled as plastic.

Packaging dispose

Finally, much of the UK's waste today comes from packaging, particularly when it comes to online shopping. At NewVaping, we recycle all products and package 95% of our customer deliveries in eco-friendly package bags, which are both recyclable and biodegradable. Any cardboard that comes with our products is also recyclable.

By choosing to quit smoking in favour of vaping, you're making a decision that's not only good for your health but also benefits the environment. However, there is always more you can do to reduce the waste impact. Choosing your vaping method carefully and committing to recycling as many vaping products as possible can make a real difference. As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, it's important for us to consider the impact of our actions on the planet. Vaping is no exception. While it is a less harmful alternative to smoking, it still has the potential to contribute to the ever-growing problem of waste pollution.

It's important to remember that vapes and e-cigarettes should never be thrown away in the regular trash or recycling bins as they contain lithium-ion batteries that can pose a fire hazard. Instead, these batteries can be recycled at battery recycling facilities, or in the battery containers located at various stores and supermarkets. By taking a few simple steps, such as choosing environmentally friendly vaping products, properly disposing of waste, and avoiding littering, vapers can help reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
